Paul Nicholas, 77, has spoken about his regret of no longer being a “heartthrob” for the British public. The star was once a renowned national TV icon when he played Vince on British sitcom Just Good Friends. 

40 years on since his TV days, the star said he is now a “nearly bald old chap” who is “desperately” clinging on to his last scrap of hair. 

But he went on to affirm himself, saying: “I am what I am.” 

He told the Daily Mirror: “I’m not a heartthrob any more. 

“I’m an almost bald old chap who’s desperately trying to hang on to his last bit of hair – without much success, I might add.

“At my age, some people are lucky enough to hang on to their hair and their looks. 

“I wish I looked like I used to but I’m not going to have Botox or anything. Ageing comes to all of us and I am what I am.”

Over 21 million viewers had tuned in to watch the 1986 Christmas finale of the show. 

Paul discussed how “flattered” he was that many of those viewers would write letters to him admitting their crushes. 

“I was always a little shy of those kind of things. But people were always nice when I signed autographs. It was flattering while it lasted.”

Just Good Friends was written and directed by John Sullivan, who died in 2011. 

The TV legend was responsible for lots of other British sitcom classics such as Only Fools and Horses and Citizen Smith. 

Paul was asked if fans could expect a reunion episode, following the later lives of the characters.

He responded saying it would never happen, as John saw the show as a challenge at the time to write a good romantic comedy series.

The star still keeps in great spirits and has maintained his sense of humour, despite his fears of ageing. 

In October last year, Paul appeared on ITV’s This Morning to perform a rap song for hosts Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary. 

Paul spoke about his upcoming music release Gold, after sharing a clip of his unlikely new rap song.

He said he wanted to release something a bit more current sounding.

“I decided I needed a change of direction,” he told the presenters.

“I’ve got a CD coming out. Three CD’s. Basically one is a pop CD, one is a theatre CD and the other is a romantic CD.

Fans of the 1980s star were shocked to see Paul on television again after almost four decades since his hit TV show, with many taking to Twitter after failing to recognise him.

“Blimey I didn’t recognise Paul Nicholas!! [shocked face] #ThisMorning,” Twitter user Fibutton wrote online.
