Kate ‘stood her ground’ while confronted with ‘uncomfortable’ heckling in Belfast

Kate Middleton was the epitome of regal and during a recent trip to Northern Ireland, where she proved just how calm and collected she could be.

The Princess of Wales, 40, along with thePrince of Walesvisited Belfast earlier in the week andduring their trip she was subjected to a rather awkward exchange.

While shaking hands with the Princess, a woman said: “Nice to meet you but it would be better if it was when you were in your own country.”

The woman, who appeared to be videoing the exchange on a mobile phone, added: “Ireland belongs to the Irish.”

Determined not to let it rattle her, a surprised Kate laughed and let go of the woman's hand before continuing to smile and greet other members of the crowd.

Following the exchange body language experts analysed Kate’s reaction and her ability to take the exchange “in her stride”.

Speaking toMailOnlinebody language expert Judi James said: “This heckling ritual would have felt even more uncomfortable for Kate than just listening to the woman’s words.

“Kate is greeting a friendly crowd and the woman holds her hand out for a shake. Once she has Kate’s hand she traps it in her own, performing several quite aggressive-looking shakes while holding it tight and even pulling Kate in towards her as she does so.”

The body language expert continued: “We can see Kate’s hand is held for a shake that goes on longer than usual. Her fingers have been pulled up the woman’s sleeve and her knuckles looked gripped tight enough to whiten.

“Kate uses eye contact but her smile doesn’t miss a beat and, instead of looking away quickly and moving on to ignore the woman dismissively, she handles the moment well by making an ‘oh’ to suggest ‘what a pity’.”

“The response of smiling but moving on quickly would be understandable and a typical royal move but standing your ground to show you’re not intimidated does look rather brave.”

The royal couple's visit to Belfast marks their first visit to Northern Ireland since theyinherited the titles of Prince and Princess of Wales following the death of the late Queen Elizabeth II last month.

For the occasion Kate looked stunning as she opted for a head-to-toe blue look, consisting of a baby blue pussybow blouse and matching jacket.

To finish off the look, the Princess of Wales wore a pair of navy cigarette trousers, a pair of heels and a structured mini bag in the same hue.

The couple lastvisited Northern Ireland back in February 2019 where they completed a two day royal tour.

The late Queen gave William and Kate the titles Baron and Baroness Carrickfergus on the morning of their wedding in 2011.
