King Charles to address nation today in first speech since death of Queen

King Charles will address the nation later today in his first speech since the death of his mother, the Queen.

In the televised speech, Charles will pay tribute to Britain's longest reigning monarch – who died yesterday at the age of 96 – and pledge his duty to a life of service.

The new King will be formally proclaimed monarch at a historic Accession Council tomorrow.

Charles has automatically become King on the death of his mother, but an Accession Council is usually convened at St James’s Palace in London within 24 hours of the death of a sovereign.

Charles shared a sombre statement following the announcement of Queen Elizabeth II's death on Thursday 8 September.

Sharing his grief across social media, under the official handle Clarence House, he said: "The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family.

"We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother.

"I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world.”

"During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which The Queen was so widely held."

Buckingham Palace made the official announcement of the Queen's death at 6.30pm on Thursday with a statement saying: “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon.

“The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”
