Lewis Capaldi and Ed Sheeran’s hilarious year-long ‘feud’ explained

During his performance at BBC’s Radio 1 Big Weekend Festival, Lewis Capaldi led the crowd in a chant of "F**k you, Ed!" aimed at fellow singer, Ed Sheeran.

The video of the moment, filmed in Dundee, Scotland at the end of May, quickly spread online, surprising some fans who were unaware of the playful feud between the two stars that has been ongoing for at least a year.

With a grin on his face, Ed playfully responded on Instagram: "I thought we were friends, Lewis. I thought we were friends.” Alongside the video, Ed cleverly hit back at Lewis using his own lyrics, writing, "I was getting kinda used to being someone you loved."

Lewis and Ed, both popular UK singer-songwriters, became friends after Lewis's rise to fame in 2019 with his hit song Someone You Loved. They even collaborated on the track Pointless, from his latest album.

The banter between the two pop stars has been ongoing for some time. It first came to light in 2022, when Lewis shared an anecdote about his fellow musician during an appearance on the Elvis Duran Show.

Lewis talked about the time he was looking to move out of his parents' house and Ed recommended a place online that looked great with "beautiful, sprawling hills," but neither realised it would smell like "cigarette smoke and dog."

Lewis purchased it thinking the smells could be removed. "I was an eager beaver," he said, but later became convinced that Sheeran put "a plague on my life."

Ed later responded: “If it does make him feel better, I will buy the house off him."

Lewis then joked: “Let’s put it this way, if this album doesn’t go well, I’ve got a real issue on my hands. I saw Ed […] saying he was gonna buy it off me, right. I’ve been chasing that man on email — nothing. I haven’t seen him since. Ed has still burdened my life to an incredible degree.”

The Scottish singer, who recently opened up about his mental health and Tourette's Syndrome in his Netflix documentary, released an emotional statement to fans on Monday.

He has cancelled all his upcoming gigs for the next three weeks, taking some time to rest and recover before performing at Glastonbury Music Festival later this month.

He wrote, "Hi everyone, hope you're well. This is a really difficult message, and one that hurts me a lot to have to type. But I'm really sorry to say that I'm going to have to cancel all commitments from now until I play Glastonbury on June 24th.

"It's been such an incredible time leading into this new album, and seeing all of the support from everyone has been beyond anything I could have ever dreamed of."

He then described how the last few months on the road have taken their toll on him "both physically and mentally". He added how he needed to take some time off to rest and be "Lewis from Glasgow for a bit" in order to be at his best and have a long-lasting career.

He concluded the statement: "I take none of this for granted and can't wait to be back doing it again. All my love, Lewis x.”
