Charlene White, 42, branded Dame Deborah James a “shining light” as the Loose Women presenter addressed her own tragic loss. Her admission comes just weeks after Deborah died last month after living with bowel cancer for the past seven years.

The mum-of-two had been diagnosed with incurable bowel cancer in 2016 and had been an avid campaigner to shed light on the struggles of living with the illness and to raise awareness.

Deborah, who hosted the BBC podcast, You, Me and The Big C, died on June 28 at the age of 40.

Charlene has now addressed a candid conversation she shared with Deborah.

It comes after the Loose Women host’s own mother died from bowel cancer at the age of 47.

Charlene explained she often discussed the pain of losing her mum with columnist Deborah.

“We worked together on a bowel cancer project for Lorraine, then we had long conversations about loss and making plans for a child’s future when you know that you may not be here,” she shared.

She added to Fabulous magazine: “Deb was an amazing woman. The impact that she’s had [on] people regarding their own cancer diagnosis and living with cancer has been incredible. She was – and still is – a shining light.”

The ITV favourite touched on her family loss being the eldest of three children.

“[My mum] was diagnosed when I was 16 and she passed away when I was 22,” Charlene said. “I’m the eldest of three.”

“My place was to be at home with the kids, my dad and my mum. I came back thinking about what my life could have been, but it worked out. I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Charlene has been in a long-term relationship with her partner Andy, who she keeps out of the public eye.

The couple shares a son named Alfie and a daughter named Florence together.

Speaking about their relationship, Charlene was quizzed about their family dynamics and structure by podcast host Gabby Logan.

The sports presenter commented: “I’m struck by the fact at the very beginning of our conversation you talked about planning and looking ahead to the future.

“You’re ahead of your own plan which is amazing. Is that something that your partner ridicules you about?”

Charlene replied: “No, he’s used to it. It’s not something that developed in older age. It’s just how I’ve always been. He knows I like to plan things out.”

The presenter explained she has always been the type of person to forward plan and over the years has set a plan in motion in terms of her career.

“He’s very much used to that,” Charlene continued. “He’s in the business. He gets it really.”

Charlene and Andy welcomed their son in August 2017 and their daughter in October 2019.

Loose Women airs weekdays on ITV at 12.30pm.
