MAFSs Matt Murray responds to ex Marilyses controlling behaviour claim

After ex-girlfriend Marilyse Corrigan this week opened up about the real reason behind last month's shock split announcement, Married At First Sight star Matt Murray has had his say on their break-up.

Speaking to OK!, 38-year-old 2021 contestant Marilyse revealed how she grew apart from Matt, 33, during their six-month relationship, after she felt he became too intense and "questioning".

But personal trainer Matt – who appeared on last year's instalment of the much-loved dating show – has since responded to the mother-of-two's assertions.

"Whilst I acknowledge Marilyse’s feelings, I do not agree with her comments," Matt explained. "There are always two sides to every story. I am very private so I don’t wish to share my side of the story publicly. I would like to draw a line under this now.

"I want to make it clear that I hold no ill feelings towards her and I wish her nothing but the best. I am committed to growth."

He added: "Moving forward, I am focusing on the positive and surrounding myself with supportive people who encourage me to be my best self."

Matt appeared on last year’s series of MAFS, where he was matched with salon owner Gemma Rose.

But their "marriage" crumbled after it emerged he’d shared a secret kiss with co-star Whitney Hughes.

Speaking about why their relationship fell apart – just weeks after telling OK! of their plans to one day marry and have kids together – Marilyse claimed that Matt demanded a level of attention that her busy schedule would not allow her to give him.

"Matt likes to have all of your attention when you’re in a relationship with him," she disclosed. "He was needy and couldn’t understand why I couldn’t be his all the time," she explains.

"I wouldn’t call them red flags, but there were times when he’d question me about silly things – things that were unnecessary – and then question me about them again. So I started feeling on edge around him."

Having had time to reflect on their brief romance, Marilyse also believes she’d turned a blind eye to Matt’s questionable behaviour, which sometimes left her feeling like she was in the wrong.

"I’d worn his favourite perfume one day and then he came home from work and questioned me two or three times about when I’d sprayed it and why. He wouldn’t let it go," she says. "And once, when I was getting ready to go on a night out with my friends, I told him I didn’t know what to wear.

"Matt told me it shouldn’t matter what I wear, because I wasn’t going to impress anybody. But I want someone to help me choose what to wear so I look and feel nice – he just missed the point."

Marilyse, who was matched with Franky Spencer during her season of MAFS, says she would often excuse some of Matt’s more flippant remarks.

"I took it with a pinch of salt," she tells us. "I thought he was asking me these things out of concern or care, but I later realised this wasn’t the case. I’ve had similar experiences in relationships before, so I knew it wasn’t right."
