Michelle Pfieffer leads tributes to rapper Coolio after death age 59

Michelle Pfieffer has led tributes to late rapper and Celebrity Big Brother star Coolio.

It was confirmed by his management that the Gangsta’s Paradise rapper had died aged 59 on Wednesday 28 September.

Coolio’s manager at Trinity Artists International, Sheila Finegan, said: “We are saddened by the loss of our dear friend and client, Coolio, who passed away this afternoon.

“He touched the world with the gift of his talent and will be missed profoundly.

“Thank you to everyone worldwide who has listened to his music and to everyone who has been reaching out regarding his passing. Please have Coolio’s loved ones in your thoughts and prayers.”

In the wake of the sad news, tributes have come rolling in for Coolio – real name Artis Leon Ivey Jr.

Coolio’s hit track Gangsta’s Paradise featured on 1995 movie Dangerous Minds, starring Michelle, which helped the song become one of the biggest rap songs in history.

Michelle’s since expressed her sadness about his death, writing: “Heartbroken to hear of the passing of the gifted artist @coolio. A life cut entirely too short. As some of you may know I was lucky enough to work with him on Dangerous Minds in 1995. He won a Grammy for his brilliant song on the soundtrack – which I think was the reason our film saw so much success."

She continued: "I remember him being nothing but gracious. 30 years later I still get chills when I hear the song. Sending love and light to his family. Rest in Power, Artis Leon Ivey Jr.”

90s icon MC Hammer also shared his condolences. He penned: “One of the nicest dudes I’ve known. Good people. R.I.P. Coolio.”

“Rest in power my brother. @Coolio Love & Respect,” added fellow rapper LL Cool J.

Meanwhile, Ice Cube labelled his passing as “sad news”, writing: “This is sad news. I witness first hand this man’s grind to the top of the industry. Rest In Peace @Coolio."

Fans of the late rapper also paid their respects on social media.

One person said: “R.I.P. #Coolio + thank you for the music”, as another wrote: “Rest In Peace #Coolio thank you for making childhood so much fun."

Another said: “Coolio was an iconic rapper. I’ll always remember him especially for his delivery of the Kenan and Kel theme song which one of the catchiest theme songs in television history. He also did “Gangsta’s Paradise,” + many more.”

“We’ll Miss You. Rest In Peace,” they went on.

Someone else branded today as “a very sad day for hip hop” in light of the news.
