Ozzy Osborne praised for battling through health issues to give surprise performance

Black Sabbath rocker Ozzy Osbourne has been praised for battling through his health issues to give a surprise performance at the Commonwealth Games Closing Ceremony at Alexander Stadium in Birmingham on Monday.

The 73 year old husband of former X Factor judge Sharon Osbourne was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease in 2019, and in June of this year, he underwent "life altering surgery".

Despite this, Ozzy put on an energetic performance as he entertained crowds, looking typically gothic in a pair of black jeans and a t-shirt with a long cover up that fell to the floor.

The rocker wore heavy dark eye makeup and wore his long dark hair loose around his shoulders.

Ozzy's performance brought an end to the games, in which Australia come top of the medal leaderboard, while England came in second place – but had its most successful games ever.

Many people took to Twitter to praise Ozzy for his performance, with one person writing: "Ozzi was clearly loving the performance, to many he is an icon it’s his home city. Music may divide but he has Parkinson’s, is 73 and took the strength to get on stage and belt out a classic song. Enjoy his enthusiasm, strength & human spirit. That my friend is kindness !"

Another tweeted: "@OzzyOsbourne @tonyiommi Thanks for closing CWG so spectacularly. It’s been an emotional celebration of all that’s good from good old Brum and the surrounding area for 11 brilliant days. And the sun kept shining!"

Someone else wrote: "Ozzys smile lit up the stadium! I could see it from where I was sitting, didn’t need the big screens".

Sharon, 69, revealed in June that Ozzy had undergone "a major operation" that would "determine the rest of his life", after he suffered long-lasting injuries as a result of a quad biking incident in 2003.

Some of these were neck injuries that were damaged even more as a result of a fall that Ozzy suffered in 2019, which caused him to have 15 screws inserted into his back.

Following Ozzy's June surgery, he took to social media to update his fans, writing: "I am now home from the hospital recuperating comfortably.

"I am definitely feeling the love and support from all my fans and send everyone a big thank you for their thoughts, prayers and well wishes during my recovery."

His wife of 38 years, Sharon, also posted about his recovery, writing: "Ozzy is doing well and on the road to recovery! Your love means the world to him.

Ozzy's performance in Birmingham on Monday marked the first time that he had performed onstage since 2020.
