Paddy McGuinness says ‘only a chippy tea will do’ as he skips NTAs and ex Christine goes it alone

TV presenter Paddy McGuinness decided against attending tonight's National Television Awards, leaving his estranged wife Christine attending alone, despite the pair being nominated together for their documentary Our Family and Autism.

Paddy, 49, is said to have made the decision to stay home due to concerns that his appearance may have been a distraction from the success of his family's documentary.

The dad-of-three has since taken to Instagram revealing how he spent the evening, while Christine, 34, attends on their behalf.

Showing off a picture of his dinner, he penned the caption: "Sometimes only a chippy tea will do! Before and after. Chips, pudding, peas and gravy."

"That does look quite excellent. With the added bonus that you won’t be able to talk as you eat it," wrote one fan in Paddy's comments.

A second added: "My absolute favourite when I get home up north."

While a third wrote: "Can’t beat a chippy tea sometimes Paddy."

Meanwhile, Christine looked typically glamorous as she represented their family at the NTAs.

The model and mum-of-three sported a stunning floor-length black gown with matching silk gloves.

In their documentary, Christine – who was herself diagnosed with autism last year – learns about the future of her children and their development.

She also discovers more about her own condition and explores how it manifested in the form of an eating disorder during her school days.

The Real Housewives of Cheshire star, along with now estranged husband Paddy, dispel myths about autism while speaking to other children and their parents, who are also living with this condition.

Their emotional documentary about the condition proved to be a hit with fans and critics, who called it "honest" and "brave".

After it aired, the pair were inundated with support and positive messages from viewers, many of whom expressed their gratitude for seeing their own experiences with autism reflected on screen.

Months after their documentary aired, the couple announced their split by posting identical statements on Instagram, saying they hope to remain the "best parents they could be."

They wrote: “A while ago we took the difficult decision to separate but our main focus as always is to continue loving and supporting our children.

“This was not an easy decision to make but we are moving forward as the best parents we can be for our three beautiful children.

“We'll always be a loving family, we still have a great relationship and still live happily in our family home together.”
