Penélope has changed her approach to acting since welcoming two children – son Leonardo, 11; and daughter Luna, nearly 9 – with her husband of nearly 12 years, Oscar winner Javier Bardem.

Speaking to the publication about motherhood, the star said: ‘Your life is greatly altered by becoming a mother, much more than with any type of project.’

It comes as Penelope revealed that she ‘threw herself to the floor and started screaming’ after being nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress in Parallel Mothers earlier this year.

Her husband Javier Bardem was also nominated for an award but they both lost out to Jessica Chastain and Will Smith in the end.

She told The Mirror of the moment she found out about her nomination: ‘That was really crazy. It was also beautiful.

‘Javier decided we should watch live and when they announced Best Actor and said Javier’s name, I started to scream. He was not moving, not reacting. I was like: ‘You can enjoy it. Do something, say something!’

‘But he was waiting because he thought maybe they would say my name too. I thought that would be impossible and then they said my name too. That’s when he started screaming.

‘I threw myself on the floor. I was laughing and crying to the point that my mother heard me and she had to come to see if I was okay!’

Penelope is set to play Italian racing legend Enzo Ferrari’s wife Laura in a new movie She was recently spotted on set in Modena, Italy, and will star alongside Star Wars and House of Gucci actor Adam Driver, 38.

The film, out next year, is set in 1957 as the company Enzo built with Laura faces bankruptcy and he prepares for a 1,000-mile race.

Penelope recently spoke about another new film she is starring in called Official Competition.

‘I feel grateful to bring a movie that we did during Covid, which we had to stop for six months – and that’s a long time,’ the Emmy nominee told W Magazine on Monday night.

‘We thought maybe it would fall apart since we were one month away from finishing. Now, we’re able to bring our movie everywhere, around the world!’

She added: ‘I used to think that the more I suffered, the better the performance was going to be,’

‘But once I had my kids, I decided to work more with my imagination and less by forcing anything from my real life. In my 20s or in my 30s, before I was a mother, I would force a little bit my personal traumatic experiences.

‘Now, I feel like that doesn’t necessarily make the result better – but it does make your life more healthy to separate fiction and reality.’
