Phil Tufnell’s regrets from previous marriages before meeting ‘soulmate’ Dawn

Preview: Phil Tufnell recalls streakers on cricket field

Phil Tufnell, 57, recently won the hearts of ITV viewers as he shared how much he was missing his “soulmate” Dawn on I’m A Celebrity…South Africa in emotional scenes.

Ahead of the I’m A Celebrity…South Africa final airing tonight, quotes from the retired English international cricketer have been unearthed, in which he openly discussed his love life regrets.

Dawn became Phil’s third wife after they got married in 2005, with the Question of Sport presenter previously being married to Lisa Bar, after his divorce from first wife Alison Squires.

In a candid 2015 interview with The Guardian, Phil admitted his first marriage to Alison was heavily motivated by his heartbreak over his mother’s tragic death from leukaemia, which hit him when he was only 16.

He told the publication: “I’ve had three marriages, the first when I was about 18, probably because of my mum passing away.

“I was looking for someone to make me a bit of dinner perhaps. I’m sorry if that sounds sexist.”

Phil went on to admit his cricket career and starting a family “didn’t mix” at the time, due to “the odd temptation” while competing away from home.

The sportsman divulged: “Perhaps being a Test cricketer and family don’t mix. You’re away from home a lot and there’s the odd temptation.

“When I was playing, wives and girlfriends weren’t allowed on long tours.

“I remember I was in Australia once, just about to bat against some bloke bowling 90mph at my head, and my ex-wife phoned up saying the dishwasher had broken down.

“What the hell was I supposed to do about that?” He added.

Fortunately for Phil, after previous struggles, he “finally” found love with Dawn, which is still going strong.

“She’s the most honest – and loyal – woman I’ve met,” the star gushed.

The couple first met in the hospitality tent at a charity cricket match he was playing in.

Phil previously told The Mirror: “The two of us got chatting and I don’t think we have stopped laughing since.

“Humour is vital in a relationship, to maintain the friendship. Me and Dawn get on like a house on fire still, that is because we have a bit of a laugh, enjoy the same sort of things, we’re both social people.”

I’m A Celebrity…South Africa airs tonight at 9pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
