Prince William to play key role in father King Charles’ ‘modest’ Coronation
King Charles III is said to be planning a “modest” Coronation, where his eldest son Prince William, 40, will play a key role.
Charles was formally proclaimed King just days after his late mother Her Majesty the Queen died last month, but his official Coronation isn’t expected to take place until sometime next year.
In light of the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, His Majesty wants a “scaled back” Coronation, which is expected to last an hour – compared to Queen Elizabeth’s three-hour long ceremony.
It’s said that the guest list has been scaled back to just 2,000 attendees, instead of 8,000.
Discussing the upcoming “modest affair”, an insider told Mail Online: “It was always planned to be a more modest affair given the world we now live in. This direction of travel has accelerated given the economic challenges we are facing.
“His Majesty is very attuned to the public mood on these things and has always had an instinctive aversion to pomp in the wrong circumstance.”
In regards to William’s “prominent role” – it will mark the first time a monarch’s child has taken part in a Coronation, according to the publication.
Charles was only four years old when his mother was crowned Queen, therefore too young to be given a role.

Doubling down on King Charles’ Coronation being more modest, royal author Robert Lacey said on BBC Radio Four’s World at One: “Let’s not forget recently we have had the immensely moving funeral of the Queen. That was an hour. And for me that is the kind of thing we should be aiming at.”
“One has to remember too while all the reverence and gravity of the Queen’s funeral was very much focused on tribute to her. A Coronation is a tribute to an institution rather than a person, with whom quite a lot of thoughtful people in this country disagree,” he added.
A date of the Coronation is yet to be determined, but it’s thought it may take place exactly 70 years on from the late Queen’s.
A source said: “There is no rush for the coronation and there is an awful lot of planning that needs to be done. But it will be in May or June depending on what is going on in the world.”
They continued to tell The Sun : “It potentially could happen on the anniversary of the Queen’s coronation on June 2 — that is one thing that is naturally considered.
“While the family remains in official royal mourning until next Monday nothing will be finalised very soon. But everyone is aware that it must happen next year and May or June is the preferred time.”
