Princess Diana’s wedding dress designer was ‘horrified’ when she saw gown on big day

Princess Diana’s wedding dress designer Elizabeth Emanuel was “horrified” with how the late royal’s wedding dress turned out.

Diana wed now-King Charles in 1981 when the former Princess of Wales was just 20 years old.

Her gown was said to have been worth an eye-watering £9,000 and included a whopping six different fabrics and 10,000 pearls.

Despite all the hard work that went into Diana’s dress, Elizabeth admitted she “felt faint” when she saw frock on the Princess of Wales’ big day.

Recalling the moment, designer Elizabeth said in appearance on ITV's Invitation to the Royal Wedding in 2018, as per Mirror Online: “We did know it would crease a bit but when I saw her arrive at St Paul's and we saw the creasing I actually felt faint.

"I was horrified, really, because it was quite a lot of creasing. It was a lot more than we thought."

In a dress rehearsal before the big day, a different material was said to have been used for Diana’s gown and didn’t appear as creased as it did when she arrived to wed Charles.

Elizabeth designed the gown with her then-husband David Emamuel, who later revealed that they made a back-up dress incase of an emergency.

“At the time we wanted to make absolutely sure that the dress was a surprise,” he told People.

"We didn’t try it on Diana. We never even discussed it. We wanted to make sure that we had something there; it was for our own peace of mind, really."

Diana didn’t just have two dresses – she also had two bouquets.

Speaking to the Express, florist David Longman shared that Queen Elizabeth II lost her flowers on her own wedding day, so started a tradition of having two to prevent a mishap like hers.

“We made two bouquets. The first one had to be delivered at 8 o'clock to Buckingham Palace. We had a police escort motorcyclist who took us all through the city to the Palace,” David said of the former Prince and Princess of Wales’ wedding day.

"Then we came back, and by that time they had finished the second bouquet and back we went again."

He added: “If we go back to the Queen’s wedding in 1947, when you look at the state photographs of all the bridesmaids and royal guests – there’s the Queen without a bouquet.

"It got lost, so in the middle of their honeymoon, they had to get dressed up again in their wedding clothes and my father had to provide another bouquet for those photographs.”

Diana and Charles filed for divorce 15 years after they married, with the princess tragically dying just a year later.
