Beyonce, who celebrates her 41st birthday on Sunday, September 4, is known for involving members of her front row audience in sing-alongs at her concerts. However, in 2013 the pop culture icon unknowingly picked a young, and embarrassed, Princess Eugenie. 

Beyonce is a world-renowned singer, often performing for tens of thousands at her sold-out tours across the world. 

Fans are usually treated to a sensational feast of dance, music and performance, and are often involved in the concert itself. 

Particularly, the chart-topping hit Irreplaceable usually sees the pop singer picking one lucky audience member in the front row to sing with her. 

In 2013, Queen Bey accidentally picked on actual royalty. 

Princess Eugenie was in the front row at the O2 arena with Kate Middleton’s brother James with his then-girlfriend Donna Air. 

In an unforgettable moment Beyonce placed the mic in front of the Princess, urging her to repeat the “to the left” phrase the song is famous for. 

The then-23-year-old found herself suddenly mute and ducked to the ground. 

Beyonce had plenty of other willing karaoke partners to pick from in the front row and smoothly continued the song. 

An insider reportedly told The Mirror that the moment was “hilarious” and Eugenie’s friends “were teasing her about her stage fright for hours afterwards”. 

This has been a concert tradition for the songstress as hundreds of clips circulate the internet with especially good, or bad, singing audience members. 

The singer sparkled in a blue jumpsuit as she demanded the entirety of the stage and often leaned over the railings to get her microphone closer to her singing audience. 

Fans have grown to expect a dance-infused show despite the incredible vocal demands of the songs. 

Beyonce has perfected this performance as the singer is usually seen belting pitch-perfect notes whilst running across the stage or crouching down to look at her fans. 

The former Destiny’s Child member has noted that when she started out in the music industry the pop group was put through some gruelling exercises. 

Her father and former manager, Mathew Knowles, forced the girls to run every morning while singing. 

While this would be enough to wind most people entirely, the trio would usually go back home only to practice their dances for a few more hours. 

The singer told Times of India in 2011: “My father made me run a mile while singing so I would be able to perform on stage without becoming exhausted.”

The technique stayed with Beyonce in her solo career as well, as her personal trainer Mark Jenkins told Insider in 2017. 

He said: “I had her run through her album in the Georgia heat. That’ll do it because then you can sing and dance if you were running and could make it sound good.”

While the workout regime seems daunting, it has enabled the singer to put on far more enthusiastic and entertaining performances as she keeps up with her dancers at every step. 

Her athleticism and drive does not go unnoticed as the star often gets complimented by fellow musicians. 

Months before her brush with Princess Eugenie, Beyonce performed at the Superbowl Halftime show, as singer Bruno Mars documented on Twitter: “Beyonce got some stamina! I’d be coughing blood by now.”

Making the singer’s stamina even more impressive is the fact that at the Halftime show Beyonce was one year postpartum with her first child Blue Ivy. 

The run-in with young Eugenie would not be the last time Beyonce brushed shoulders with royalty. 

In 2019, Beyonce voiced Nala in the remake of The Lion King, and met Prince Harry and Meghan Markle at the film’s London premiere, although this time both parties were willing to vocalise.
