Queen’s head groom heartbreakingly reveals her pony Emma had ‘sixth sense’ Her Majesty wouldn’t ride her again

Queen Elizabeth II’s head groom has revealed that the late monarch’s beloved horse Emma had a “sixth sense” that she wouldn’t be riding her again.

Emma was ridden by the Queen for over two decades and is said to have been her favourite pony.

With this in mind, Emma was standing waiting for Her Majesty yesterday, Monday 19 September, as she bid a final farewell to the Queen on her way to St George’s Chapel.

The Queen’s head groom Terry Pendry has since reflected on the monarch’s relationship with her horse and how Emma appeared to know that she wouldn’t be ridden by the royal again.

“It was an honour and privilege to have Emma with me to say goodbye to Her Majesty for the last time,” he told Mail Online.

“The Queen adored Emma and rode her for more than 20 years so it was only right she should have been there, and she behaved impeccably.

“I think she probably had some sort of sixth sense that Her Majesty wouldn't be riding her anymore and she did her proud by standing there so respectfully.”

Terry went on: “I've been riding with the Queen for years and the last time she was on Emma was back on July 18 – two days before she left for Balmoral.

“It's a memory I shall never forget, and I tell you something, the Queen may have been frail as any 96-year-old would be, but she was still as sharp as anything, she was crystal clear.”

Terry has previously discussed Her Majesty’s relationship with pony Emma and two years ago described the equine as “a wonderful servant to Her Majesty and is still going strong at the age of 24 as one of The Queen’s riding ponies”.

Emma wasn’t the only one of the Queen’s beloved animals to bid her a final farewell yesterday as her Corgis Muick and Sand were also in attendance.

The young dogs – one on a red lead and one on a blue lead – were brought out into the quadrangle by two pages in red tailcoats for the arrival of the Queen’s coffin after its London procession.

The Queen owned more than 30 corgis during her reign and was known for her love of the breed.

Andrew, the Duke of York and his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson will now look after the Queen’s beloved corgis following her death.

A spokeswoman for Andrew said he and Sarah, Duchess of York will take on Muick and Sandy – two dogs the late monarch received as gifts from her son.
