Rod Stewart hits back at claims he exits stage ‘for a rest’ while on tour

Rod Stewart talks about taking a break and ‘retiring’

Veteran rocker Sir Rod Stewart has rubbished claims that he leaves the stage so he can have a rest during his shows.

The 78-year-old music legend was responding to reports that he only departs the stage to recuperate during the show.

“It’s funny, critics keep saying on this tour, ‘Oh, he’s gone off the stage to have a rest.’

“No I haven’t! I’ve gone off the stage because I’m wringing wet [with sweat].

“I’m so bl**dy fit, you won’t believe it,” he said in a new interview with People magazine.

This echoes sentiments he expressed on The One Show last month.

However, in that instance the dad of seven used far more colourful language to express himself.

While discussing it he accidentally let slip the word “b*******” leaving hosts Angellica Bell and Roman Kemp shocked.

His surprising turn of phrase came about when Roman mentioned that Beyonce has nine costume changes a night when she performs.

This led the Baby Jane singer to confess: “I do four.”

“I change because I want to entertain,” the veteran performer explained.

“I’ve had critics say, ‘He went off to have a rest because he was tired’.”

“No, I was sweating my b******s off,” he exclaimed before a flustered Roman stepped in to apologise.

Rod is currently on what he describes as his last big tour and will be playing dates across the UK until July 7.

While he isn’t retiring, he plans to take his music in a different direction.

“This will be the last time ’round, I think, to do the rock ‘n’ roll stuff because I want to move on to swing music and the Great American Song Book.

“There’s only so many years I want to keep singing Hot Legs and Da Ya Think I’m Sexy?” he says.

With that in mind he has recorded a new swing album with Jools Holland which he plans to release on Valentine’s Day next year.

While he plans to keep touring the star said that he can’t see himself performing that sort of music in larger venues and that he will be focusing on more intimate shows.
