Samuel L Jackson’s ‘eye roll’ after losing Tony Award goes viral

Samuel L Jackson was nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role at the 76th Annual Tony Awards thanks to his portrayal of Doaker Charles in The Piano Lesson.

Samuel was nominated against Arian Moayed, Jordan Cooper, David Zayas and Brandon Uranowitz, and some thought the Academy Award nominee would take home the gong.

However, it was Leopoldstadt star Brandon who was crowned the winner.

As the winner was called out, the Pulp Fiction star looked relatively unimpressed before seemingly “rolling his eyes” and giving a delayed applause.

Samuel’s face quickly went viral on Twitter, with fans saying it “took them out”.

Tammi wrote: “Samuel L Jackson’s face took me all the way out He looks like he knew he wasn’t getting the Tony.”

A user named Tony echoed: “Oh my God, Samuel L Jackson’s face.” 

Another wrote: “Samuel L Jackson does not have a good non-winner face. I’m sure his eye roll will be a meme.” 

And a fourth compared his face to that of his Marvel character Nick Fury. They said: “Samuel L Jackson looked like Nick Fury after realising he didn’t win his category.”

However, another fan pointed out that Samuel appeared to be making the same face throughout the entire ceremony, including on the red carpet with his wife LaTanya Richardson who made her directorial debut with The Piano Lesson.

That wasn’t the only moment of the night that tickled Samuel L Jackson fans.

Ariana DeBose, who will be remembered for her opening rap at the BAFTAs 2023, began the show with another dance performance.

At one point, she got Samuel involved and awkwardly got him and LaTanya to stand up out of their seats.

Samuel looked bewildered and could be seen saying something to the West Side Story actress before returning to his seat.

Twitter user Andrew joked: “Clearly that Ariana DeBose talk to Samuel L Jackson was not pre-planned.”
