Serena Williams Urges People to Forgive Will Smith After Oscars Slap

AceShowbiz –Serena Williams believes it’s time to forgive Will Smith following his Oscars slap scandal. The retired tennis athlete discussed the March 2022 incident during her sit-down with Gayle King on “CBS Mornings“.

In the interview, Serena noted that “we’re all human” who made mistakes. She also talked about Questlove presenting an Oscar in the Best Documentary category for “Summer of Soul” immediately after Will took the stage to slap Chris Rock for joking about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith‘s bald head.

“I thought it was such an incredible film and I feel that there was an incredible film after that with Questlove that kind of was overshadowed,” Serena shared of the movie. “But I also feel that I’ve been in a position where I’ve been under a lot of pressure and made a tremendous amount of mistakes, and I’m the kind of person that’s just like, ‘I’ve been there. I’ve made a mistake. It’s not the end of the world.’ “

The 23-time Grand Slam winner went on to note, “We’re all imperfect and we’re all human and let’s just be kind to each other. So, that’s often forgotten a lot.”

Serena’s father Richard also previously showed support for Will, who won an Oscar for his role as Richard in “King Richard“. Weighing on the scandal for the first time, Richard insinuated the Academy’s subsequent decision to ban the 57-year-old actor, who resigned as a member of the organization, from the Oscars and other gala events for 10 years was too long.

“I think that whatever [Will] wants to do, that’s what he should do. People are going to think what they want to think,” Richard said last month.

“If he apologized [that’s good], however he wants to deal with the situation. I wouldn’t judge anyone. They should let him keep his Oscar, too. When a person [has] worked for [it] so much, then leave it alone. I really appreciate him doing so very much so I could never criticize him,” he added. Saying the ban was too harsh, he continued, “Just two days, that’s enough, that’s very much.”
