Sophie Wessex looks elegant in silver gown as she joins Prince Edward at Royal Variety

Prince Edward and his wife Sophie, Countess of Wessex, have arrived on the red carpet ahead of tonight's Royal Variety Performance 2022.

The late Queen's youngest son and his wife of 23 years looked glamorous as they represented the Royal Family at the event, which was attended by Prince William and Kate Middleton last year, although the couple will not be there this year as they are currently in the US.

Prince Edward, 58, looked smart in a black tuxedo suit, whilst 57 year old Sophie – who was known to share a close bond with the late Queen – looked stunning in a silver floor-length gown.

With her blonde locks swept back in an elegant up-do for the evening, Sophie opted for subtle makeup that highlighted her features and a slick of rose lipstick.

The Royal chose a floaty long-sleeved dress that cinched in at the waist with a tied belt, and featured dainty buttons on the cuffs.

The Countess of Wessex finished off her outfit with a sparkly silver clutch bag and matching heels for the evening event.

The couple are often seen on official royal duties, as they've come to the forefront of the royal family as some of its most senior members, representing King Charles III and Camilla, Queen Consort.

The Royal Variety Performance happens every year, but this is the first since the death of Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away on 8 September, and it will pay a special tribute to her, as Andrew Lloyd Webber, Gary Barlow and Gareth Malone are set to perform a special version of Sing accompanied by members of the London Youth Choir.

The show will be held in London's Royal Albert Hall and hosted by multi award-winning comedian and actor Lee Mack.

Lee said of his hosting gig: “I was going to buy tickets for this year’s Royal Variety Performance, so not only is it a real honour to be asked to host it but it’s also saved me a few quid.

"I now just have to work out the logistics of introducing these brilliant acts and also rushing back to my seat to watch them.”

The Royal Variety Performance will see a number of singers and performers take to the stage, including Andrew Lloyd-Webber, Ellie Goulding and Omid Djalili.

Other massive signings include Disco Soul R&B sensations Nile Rodgers & Chic, Brit Award winner George Ezra, Eurovision star and singer Sam Ryder, and powerhouse pop star Becky Hill.

There will also be performances from the cast of the musical Cabaret, who will take to the stage with an exclusive performance, and Britain's Got Talent winner, comedian Axel Blake, will deliver a stand-up routine.

Disney’s Newsies will also perform a sensational extract from their Tony award-winning musical, which opens in London later this month.
