Spice Girls’ Mel C pulls out of New Year’s Eve concert in Poland over ‘issues that do not align with communities I support’… and is praised on social media by LGBTQ community

Melanie ‘Mel C’ Chisholm has withdrawn from participating in a New Year’s Eve concert in Poland amid what appears to be linked to the anti-LGBTQ views promulgated by government officials.

Mel C, 48, took to social media Monday to announce she was not going to take part in the concert, which is sponsored by TVP, Polish state media.

The Spice Girls alum – who said last month she would not perform in Qatar over its human rights record – said that she made the decision to cancel after she was apprised of ‘some issues’ involving groups of people who she supports.

‘In light of some issues that have been brought to my attention, that do not align with the communities I support, I’m afraid I will no longer be able to perform in Poland as planned on New Year’s Eve,’ she said.

She added, ‘I hope to be back there very soon. Hope you’re all having a wonderful Christmas and best wishes for 2023.’ 

The decision comes amid anti-LGBTQ political views in Poland in the last few years, with some towns saying they are ‘LGBT-free zones.’ 

Mel C received plaudits on Twitter for her announcement, with many users thanking her for her actions in the situation.

The musical artist was seen onstage at Manchester Pride this past August 

‘I’m super proud of you, my dear. This small things change the world. Thanx,’ one user wrote.

Another said, ‘On behalf of all Poles, for whom democracy and the rule of law are of paramount importance, as well as respect and tolerance towards various environments and social groups, I would like to thank you for the very good decision you have made.’

Said another person, referencing TVP: ‘I love you for this, Melanie. You stand by your morals. I’m so happy you’ve pulled out of this after learning what kind of channel it is.’

Mel C was honored last year with the Celebrity Ally award at the British LGBT Awards.
