Sweet reason Kate and William chose the name Louis and the Royal record that he set
Louis Arthur Charles – or Prince Louis of Wales – was born on the 23rd April 2018.
He is the youngest child of Prince William and Kate Middleton, but was also the heaviest baby, weighing in at 8lb 7oz – three more lbs than his older brother, George.
But while we’ve gotten to know the cheeky Prince over the last five years, there was a brief time where we didn’t even know his name.
When Louis was first born, his parents actually took a gruelling four days to announce the name of their second son – two days longer than their older children, Prince George, nine, and Princess Charlotte, seven.
When the royal couple finally announced the name on their Twitter account, fans were ecstatic. But of course, they were also desperate to learn the meaning behind the title, as for some, it was a little unexpected due it not being a ‘traditional’ name despite running in the family.
So, let’s learn the sweet reasoning behind Kate and Will’s choice…
What does the name Louis mean?
It’s kind of expected for a royal name to be steeped in significance. In terms of Louis, his means “famous in battle” or “famous warrior,” and originates from Germany and France.
Why did the couple name him Louis?
Firstly, Louis is one of William’s own middle names. It was chosen by his father, King Charles, whose Coronation will take place on Saturday, as a tribute to his late mentor and great uncle, Lord Louis Mountbatten.
In 1979, the Earl was murdered by an IRA bomb, along with three other people – his teenage grandson Nicky Knatchbull, teenage boathand Paul Maxwell, plus passenger Lady Brabourne, who died as a result of her injuries the next day.
The bomb was planted in his fishing boat in Mullaghmore, County Sligo Ireland, and the deaths have since been portrayed in the popular Netflix series, The Crown.
Regardless of the name being ‘non-traditional’, it does run in the family, as the Earl’s father was also called Louis. The late Prince Philip’s grandfather also held the same name – Prince Louis of Battenberg.
As well as these touching tributes, sources revealed that Kate and Wills simply loved the name so much, which makes sense, because it’s also one of Prince George’s middle names.
At the time of the name reveal, historian Dr Judith Rowbotham described it as a “little surprising” but nevertheless a safe choice. She also added that it was a “very much affectionate tribute,” and an “acknowledgement of a wider heritage.”
What about his middle names?
Louis’ first middle name is standard royal and very traditional. Arthur is the middle name of both William and Charles, not to mention the name of Queen Victoria’s third son.
His second middle name, Charles, is another very obvious one – named after his grandfather, the King. Plus, Louis’ uncle, Prince Harry also shares the same title.
