Tears and triumphs! BAFTA winners in full on a night of stars and surprises

The BAFTA TV Awards made a welcome return to our TV screens, with dozens of stars gathering to celebrate the most prestigious awards in British television.

The annual awards bash tonight, 14 May, was hosted by comedians Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan and took place at The Royal Festival Hall in London.

As most awards ceremonies are, the evening was filled with laughter, tears and glamorous red carpet looks, and some TV stars even walked away with two awards.

Famous faces including Claudia Winkleman, Anne-Marie Duff and Kate Winslet all took home gongs at this year's BAFTAs, with shows including The Masked Singer and The Traitors also winning.

The evening kicked off with the female performance in a comedy programme award, which went to actress Siobhán McSweeney for her performance in hit Channel 4 show Derry Girls.

This was followed by Claudia's first win of the evening, as hit BBC reality show The Traitors, which she hosted, took home for the reality and constructed factual gong.

The 51 year old then won the entertainment performance award for presenting The Traitors, leaving her speechless.

During her second win at the TV BAFTA, Claudia said she did not want to get emotional as her mascara “will run” before jokingly asking her husband: “Please, can we have a dog?”

She wasn't the only one to head on stage twice however, as actress Kate Winslet scooped two gongs too.

Kate won the award for leading actress for her role in Channel 4's I am Ruth, with the TV show also winning the single drama award.

She was emotional as she accepted both awards and gushed over her daughter Mia, 22, who appeared alongside her in I Am Ruth and was also at the BAFTAs.

Elsewhere, The Repair Shop's special Royal episode, which saw King Charles appear on the show, took home the daytime award, while The Masked Singer won the award for entertainment programme, beating Strictly Come Dancing and Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway.

Anne-Marie Duff won the supporting actress award for her role in Apple TV's Bad Sisters and Lenny Rush's performance in Am I Being Unreasonable? saw him take home the gong for male performance in a comedy programme.

Alongside the award announcements, there were also live musical performances at the 2023 BAFTAs, with singer Lewis Capaldi and Jax Jones both take to the stage.

Rob and Romesh's jokes also proved to be a hit with the audience, with the pair even mocking Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield's 'queuegate' scandal.

As co-hosts Rob and Romesh gave a shoutout to Imelda Staunton, the former quipped: "She's nominated for her performance in The Crown… apparently Phil and Holly got to watch that a couple of days before everybody else!"
