Matty Healy has come under fire after mocking an Irish name while meeting a fan during a recent album signing event.

The 1975 singer, 33, has been branded ‘rude’ by social media users after a video of the awkward moment was shared online by the fan.

In the video, Matty asks the excited fan her name so he can sign his autograph and she tells him it is Dervla.

Matty then repeats the Irish name and tells her: ‘What? It sounds like something you move gravel with’.

Although Dervla saw the funny side to the exchange as she delightedly shared it on Twitter, some people insisted they thought his reaction was uncalled for.

Some highlighted Matty’s ‘British’ sense of humour, and said: ‘Needlessly overreacting to an ethnic Irish name for a cheap laugh is definitely is British humour but it’s not the defence you think it is.’

One other said: ‘Imagine meeting your idol and they say this lol.’

However one person replied in defence of Matty and suggested it was typical of the star, writing: ‘You obviously don’t know much about Matty Healy.’

But another found in inexcusable, and wrote: ‘Oh wow that’s nice. I’d be devastated if someone was that rude to me that I obviously was a fan of.’

One other person demanded that Matty should apologise to the fan for poking fun at her name, and described it as ‘absolutely woeful’.

Another penned: ‘Why’s he reacting like she chose her own name at birth. Keep your scribble, hun.’

Other fans suggested that this ‘relationship’ Matty has with his fans is well known and he often makes jokes when meeting them in person.

Referencing the now-viral video, Dervla wrote ‘WTF have I caused’, and Matty jokingly responded saying: ‘It’s so f***ing good I cannot.’

The 1975 are an English pop rock band formed in 2002 in Wilmslow, Cheshire. 

Now based in Manchester, the band consists of lead vocalist and guitarist Matthew ‘Matty’ Healy, lead guitarist Adam Hann, bassist Ross MacDonald, and drummer George Daniel.
