Will Young launches no holds barred attack on David Beckham amid Qatar ambassadorship
Will Young has launched a furious attack on David Beckham over his involvement in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The singer, 43, took to Instagram to criticise the footballer for his involvement in the football tournament, where he is acting as an ambassador for a rumoured £150 million fee.
Will has called out the footballer for not showing support for LGBT+ people by supporting a tournament being held in a country where same-sex relationships are illegal.
The Middle Eastern country has also received criticism for its treatment of migrant workers, something Will called out footballer David for not speaking out against.
In a lengthy post, Will wrote: “Qatar is of course not the only country in the world with appalling records on human rights. The argument that sport is not political is duplicitous and two faced. Look at South Africa during apartheid, look at Russia now. Who decides the yays and the nays?
“What is undoubtedly clear however is a star like you @davidbeckham who I once sang for (not for any money I hasten to add) at your birthday has disappointed me more than I can say.
"Our paths crossed a fair few times due to being with 19 Management and you were always friendly and generous. People do things for money we all know that.”
The singer then called out David Beckham for not speaking out against host country Qatar, writing: “Here is what irks me the most – not a WHISPER from yourself David to show solidarity, not a WHISPER from yourself to show support for the practical massacre of migrant workers, not a WHISPER David to help LGBTQIA+ communities living under constant danger.
“The decision to take the alleged £150 million over 15 years is greedy enough, the burying of your head in the sand from you, your team and your advisers is repellent and cowardice personified.
“So here is what I suggest if you won’t change your mind: give £1 million to LGBTQIA+ charities in Qatar every year that you get your £10 million a year. Can something be salvaged from this odious deal?
“Perhaps those funds can help provide much needed safety to those living in terror whilst your posters smile down on the people of Qatar.”
In the comments, many fans agreed with Will, with one writing: "Hear, hear. His silence is appalling."
Another added: "well said. £150 million! No one needs that much money!"
Meanwhile, a third person wrote: "The most vexing thing is that he doesn't need the money at all. He chose to align himself with no outside pressure. It was something he wanted to do. He's not an ally."
Will Young is not the first celebrity to call out David Beckham for his involvement in the World Cup.
Comedian Joe Lycett recently made headlines when he appeared to throw £10k into a shredder after David Beckham didn't respond to his call for the footballer to end his relationship with Qatar.
However, it was later revealed to be a stunt, with Joe revealing he'd donated the money to charity instead.
In a video, Joe told viewers: "This is my final message to David Beckham. It's me – that p***k who shredded loads of money in a cost of living crisis. So, where were we?
"I told you I was going to destroy £10,000 if you didn't end your relationship with Qatar before the first day of the World Cup.
"And then when you didn't end your relationship or even respond in any way, I streamed myself dropping 10k into a shredder. Or did I?
"I haven't quite told you the whole truth. Because the truth is the money that went into the shredder was real, but the money that came out was fake.
"I would never destroy real money. I would never be so irresponsible. In fact, the ten grand had already been donated to LGBTQ+ charities before I even pressed send on the initial tweet last week."
