Will Young shocks fans as he strips down to underwear on stage amid heatwave

Will Young gave fans at Kew Music festival more than they bargained for during a performance on one of the hottest nights of the year.

The singer, 43, performed to thousands of revellers at London’s Kew Gardens on Friday 8 July, on what was one of the hottest evenings the UK has seen in a while.

Arriving on stage shortly after 9pm when the temperature was still a sweaty 27°C, he joked to fans about regretting his poor choice of outfit.

He was wearing a hat, a shirt over a T-shirt, and thick, black pleather (plastic leather) trousers much to his own amusement.

“I shouldn’t have worn these,” he quipped.

While the over-shirt came off within a few minutes of performing, as did his hat, Will reportedly lasted around 45 minutes with the rest of his clothes on.

During that time he kept the crowd going with his hits including Who Am I, Changes and Light My Fire.

Shortly after starting his 2003 hit Your Game, Will gave in and whipped off his trousers while standing at the mic, much to the enjoyment of cheering and screaming fans.

“Shouldn’t have worn grey,” he commented right after stripping off, referring to his pants, just visible under the hem of his top.

“My trousers were so unbearably slimy, I couldn’t face it anymore,” he laughed.

And then he quipped: “Also I’ve got great legs…” to the delight of the crowd.

Will finished his set still bottomless with renditions of his hits Jealousy, Leave Right Now and Evergreen.

Meanwhile,Will shared a view into his family life of late, and the tragedy surrounding his brother’s suicide.

The pop star's brother killed himself almost two years ago after a lengthy battle with depression and alcoholism.

In a Channel 4 documentary, Will opened up on the struggles he faced looking after his twin brother as his situation worsened.

He said: "It's important to tell my story, to tell Rupert's story, to tell my family's story and to tell the story of 20 years living with my twin, who was an alcoholic.

"Other people will be experiencing this and I don't want them to feel alone."

In July 2020, a week or so before Rupert's death, Will reported him as a trespasser and had him removed from his home.

"At the end, he would be drinking 24 hours a day," said Will.

"You've got this monster who's not moving. So the only thing was to throw him out but also to be aware he might end up killing himself. I was OK with everything I'd done to try to help him."
