Dog owners told to never let pooches near the bathroom in deadly warning

If you're a dog owner, then one of your main priorities will be keeping your pooch safe.

And if you want to do that, then you should do your best to keep them away from the bathroom, according to experts.

Speaking to Insider, veterinarian Rachel Barrack shared a number of tips on how to keep your pet safe.

And one of these was to keep dogs out of the bathroom.

"Toilet bowls do not contain clean water that is appropriate for your dog or cat to consume,” she said.

"Keep the lid down so your large-breed dog cannot access the bowl.”

Along with the dirty water, many bathrooms also contain harsh chemicals and personal care products, which can be toxic to dogs.

So it's best to try and keep the bathroom door closed and ignore your pet’s whimpering if they start clawing at the door.

As well as bathrooms, Rachel also warned to keep dogs away from alcohol, as they can suffer from "severe side effects" if they consume it.

Many drink mixers also contain artificial sweetener xylitol, which can be toxic to animals even in small amounts.

"Pets should never be given alcohol,” she said as it ‘depresses the nervous system', which can lead to symptoms including hypothermia, diarrhoea and vomiting.

The warning comes after a vet also shared toys dogs should never be given – including two popular bones.
