Most of us have good intentions to eat plenty of fruit and vegetables – but sometimes it can be difficult to know how best to store food to keep it as fresh as possible.
But now, one user on TikTok has revealed their easy tricks and hacks to make your fresh produce last for much, much longer.
In a video shared by @user8100293452186, believed to be from the US, they revealed their simple steps to keep your bananas firm and yellow, stop your potatoes from sprouting, and your onions free from mould.
Sharing the clip, they posted they would be sharing ‘food storage tips your greengrocer would never tell you.’
In the short video, the voice-over explains that simply rinsing your bananas can help remove some of the ripening agent ethylene from the fruit, which they produce themselves.
The TikTok video recommends rinsing the bananas in cold water and patting dry to remove any ripening agent from the fruit
After that, wrap a bit of wet kitchen paper towel around the stalk to stop them from producing so much ethylene
After drying, the video says a wet paper kitchen towel should be placed around the stalk of the bananas to stop them from producing too much ethylene and causing the bananas to ripen too quickly.

Elsewhere, they recommend placing onions into a pair of tights and sectioning them off individually, tying a knot between each one.
Hanging them in a dark cupboard can make them last for as long as 12 months.
Another top tip the video suggests is keeping your potatoes away from onions, as the gases they release will cause the other to spoil more quickly.
Instead, keep the potatoes in an airtight bag with an apple and store them in a dark place.
According to the TikToker, this should stop them from sprouting and keep them nice and firm for longer.
Another tip they suggest to keep spring onions, or scallions, fresher for longer is to wet a paper towel and wrap the white bulb part of the vegetable inside. This will ensure they stay firm for up to two weeks.
Tomatoes can also get battered and squishy quite quickly, so the video recommends placing a piece of sticky tape over the stalk end to trap in the moisture. If this is done they can then last up to three weeks after purchasing.
If you have time to make up a little potion, the clip also claims that cabbages can easily be treated to last for longer.
Mix a tea spoon of sugar and salt with a splash of clear liquor (vodka or gin would work) and stir together. Remove the outer leaves of the cabbage and cut the end of the stalk off.
Once the end is patted dry with a paper towel, apply some of the liquid to the stump and wrap in clingfilm and store in the fridge. This should help it to last for up to three weeks.
And lastly, keep the vampires at bay by keeping your garlic fresh and edible. Simply take the bulbs and place in an airtight bag along with some salt and tea leaves. Voila!
It’s not the first time a social media user has wowed the internet with their food storage techniques.
One woman previously revealed the ‘game changing’ way she stores fruit inside her fridge for weeks, saving her a fortune on groceries.
Sandra, 26, from Australia, stores fruit inside mason jars rather than keeping them inside the plastic containers from the supermarket.
The fruit stays fresher, juicier and crisper for two weeks longer than if it were stored in plastic containers due to less oxygen.
‘I tried it and will never go back, it keeps the fruit fresh forever,’ she wrote.

Sandra shared the hack with thousands on Facebook and many revealed that they too follow the same storage method.
‘This really does work! Works well for cut fruit and vegetables too,’ a Facebook user wrote.
‘Have done this for years, fruit stays as fresh as they day you buy it due to no moisture getting inside the jar,’ another wrote.
‘I store all my fresh herbs from my garden in mason jars too and a big glass jar full of water will keep your avocados fresh for weeks,’ a third wrote.
Others shared how they store their fruit inside mason jars and revealed the secret is not to wash them or add water.
