Emmerdale’s Robert Sugden actors now from legal battle to Hollywood stardom

Last month, formerEmmerdale star Danny Miller teased that there’dbe a potential reunion between Aaron Dingle and Robert Sugden as part of the ITV soap’s 50th anniversary.

Despite the duo being on-screen exes, the pair have been affectionately nicknamed Robron by fans and have been noticeably absent from the soap after Robert was sent to prison in 2019,with Aaron leaving two years later.

And while Emmerdale fans will know that the character of Aaron has been played by two separate actors (Danny and Danny Webb), it turns out that a whopping four stars have played the role of Robert. Let’s take a peek…

Richard Smith

After the character first launched onto our screens back in 1986 as a newborn baby, the original Robert Sugden was played by a baby called Richard Smith.

Given that the character was just a tot at the time, Richard technically didn’t do any acting, though was doted on by his on-screen parents Jack and Pat Sugden.

Following three years on the soap, baby Richard said goodbye to Emmerdale in 1989 and appears to have turned his back on the small screen since.

Christopher Smith

From 1989, Robert was played by actor Christopher Smith when he was just four years old.

However, after producers decided that it was time for more adult storylines and therefore wanted an older actor, the star left in September 2001 and sued Yorkshire Television for unfair dismissal,The Sun reports.

Since his time on the show, Christopher has moved to Los Angeles where he works behind the screens as a TV producer.

Karl Davies

Between 2001 and 2009,Karl Davies took on the role of Robert and began to carve out the character’s name as a soap bad boy.

Away from Emmerdale, 40 year old Karl has remained in the world of acting and his career has gone from strength to strength thanks to a series of high profile gigs.

TV fans may be familiar with Karl from shows including Happy Valley, The Syndicate and Game Of Thrones where he played Alton Lannister.

Ryan Hawley

As the most recent actor to fill Robert’s boots, Ryan Hawley appeared on Emmerdale for five years between 2014 and 2019.

While on the popular soap, actor Ryan found himself at the centre of some memorable storylines, including coming out as bisexual marrying three times and committing murder not once, but twice.

It appears that Ryan has continued to work on the small screen and appeared in thriller Silent Witness and Matters of Life and Death, though it would be understandable if fans struggled to recognise him after the star grew out his hair for his role.
