Exact time M&S, Tesco, Waitrose and other supermarkets slash prices in store

Tesco, Waitrose and Morrisons were ranked in the top five most expensive UK supermarkets in April 2023, but their high food prices make for even better savings when items are reduced. And shoppers searching for a bargain will find a variety of marked-down items if they visit stores at the right time.

Reduced items are easy to spot by their bright yellow barcode label and are commonly grouped in one aisle of a supermarket or convenience store.

However, some of the best deals tend to be hidden amongst their full-price counterparts, making them harder to spot.

As well as knowing where to look, customers searching for a bargain need to time their visit right to snap up the goods before they all go.

Supermarkets including Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, Tesco, Morrisons and Aldi have shared exactly when shoppers will find the best deals in store.

Waitrose

Ranked the most expensive supermarket in April 2023 by Which, Waitrose is a popular spot for bargain hunters looking to save on goods sold in-store.

According to food discount experts at plate-deals, the upper-crust grocer offers most of its yellow-sticker discounts after 6pm.

They explained that the bargains tend to appear one hour before stores close (between 9pm and 10pm Monday to Saturday, and 3pm-4pm on Sundays).

These timings may vary between larger and smaller branches.

Marks and Spencer

Speaking to Which, M&S revealed that times vary by store, but are likely to be near closing time.

According to their store finder, most branches close at 8pm or 9pm, Monday to Saturday and at 5pm on Sundays.

Aldi

The same closing time rule applies to Aldi stores too, so shoppers are in with the best chance of finding a bargain in the last hours before stores close.

In store, customers will find perishable items like bread, meat, fruit and vegetables marked down by either 30 percent or a staggering 75 percent.

This is done on the final day of the “display until” period.

Ambient groceries including pasta, cereal and tinned goods may also be marked down with a yellow label if the packaging is deemed “imperfect”.

Most Aldi shops close at 10pm on weekdays and Saturdays, and at 4pm or 5pm on Sundays.

Tesco & Morrisons

Just like Waitrose, shoppers who go to Tesco and Morrisons are most likely to find bargains towards the end of the day.

However, these retailers set no specific times for reducing items so it could mean some produce is marked down earlier in the day.

Asda

Ranked in the middle of Which’s “cheapest supermarket” table for April 2023, Asda’s rollback prices are joined by discounted items twice a day.

The retailer applies yellow labels to expired products once in the morning and once in the evening, so shoppers have double the chance to bag a bargain.

Lidl

The discount retailer ranked as the second cheapest supermarket after Aldi by a mere 65p for the average grocery shop.

And just like Asda, Lidl customers can find reduced-label items twice a day in-store. Products are marked down once in the morning and again before closing.
