“Don’t Be Cruel” but it looks like that accent isn’t going away quite just yet.
Austin Butler employed his standard Elvis Presley drawl while doing red-carpet interviews at the 2023 Oscars, provoking a chorus of howls online.
“when is Austin Butler losing the accent? Or is it part of his DNA now?” asked one Oscar viewer, while another wrote, “Austin Butler still has a hint of that accent and I’m gonna shove him into a locker”.
Other fans were more direct with their distaste for the voice.
“Austin Butler DROP THAT F*ING ACCENT!!!!!” wrote one.
“austin butler still has that goddamn accent,” chortled another, while one person threatened to break the law.
“austin if you don’t drop this damn accent after tonight i will commit a crime i’m sick of it,” commented a troll.
The actor is up for Best Actor for his starring role as “Elvis” in Baz Luhrmann’s critically acclaimed biopic. He’s up against Brendan Fraser, Bill Nighy, Colin Farrell and Paul Mescal.
The Disney Channel alum was trolled last January when he accepted an award at the Golden Globe Awards and spoke with a pronounced Southern drawl, despite hailing from Southern California.

“Oh man, all my words are leaving me. I just am so grateful right now. I’m in this room full of my heroes. Brad [Pitt], I love you. Quentin [Tarantino], I printed out the ‘Pulp Fiction’ script when I was 12. I cannot believe I’m here right now,” the 31-year-old said, invoking Presley’s signature twang.
“So that fake Elvis accent is just Austin Butler’s voice now, huh #GoldenGlobes,” one viewer tweeted.
“Austin Butler taking ‘method acting’ WAY further than it needs to with this voice in his acceptance speech. #GoldenGlobes,” another wrote via Twitter.
Perhaps the “Life Unexpected” alum took the criticism to heart because last month he shared that he wanted to stop talking like the King of Rock and Roll now that the “Elvis” press tour is almost over.
“I am getting rid of the accent, but I have probably damaged my vocal cords with all that singing,” he shared on Britain’s “The Graham Norton Show.”
