For sale! Modest home of Swindon Town's most-capped England player

Not quite a Premier League mansion! For sale, the former home of a footballer with a record number of England caps… by a Swindon Town player

  • The property is where Swindon Town football legend Howard Fleming lived

A modest terrace property in Swindon where an England footballer was born and lived is for sale.

The three-bedroom property is on the market for £240,000, which is £50,000 less than the average house price.

It is a far cry from the spectacular multi-million pound homes that are normally associated with today’s England footballers.

The property proudly displays a Swindon Heritage blue plaque on its exterior, above the front door, recording its record-holding resident, Howard Fleming.

The property was where Swindon Town footballer Howard Fleming was born and lived

Fleming, the footballer in question, was a Swindon Town footballer in 1907 until 1924.

He continues to hold the record for the number of England appearances made by a Swindon Town player, with 11 caps between 1904 and 1914, when World War 1 broke out.

England’s most capped footballer overall is goalkeeper Peter Shilton, who picked up 125 appearances for the national team, followed by Wayne Rooney, with 120, and David Beckham, with 115.

Fleming, who was born in April 1887 and died aged 78 in August 1955, is regarded as a Swindon Town legend, scoring 203 times in 332 games in 17 years.

Fleming played for the national team from 1909 until 1914. And then during World War I, he worked as a physical education instructor.

After the war, he returned to the area and when Swindon Town joined the Football League, he was one of the players who played in the inaugural first match.

He remains the only Swindon player to have represented England at senior level while playing for the club

The average price of a property sold in Swindon during the past year is £274,403, according to property website Zoopla.

It is more than £50,000 less that the average value of a property in Britain, which currently stands at £327,693.
