Gran branded ‘beanpole’ wears shorts to defy trolls who tell her to ‘cover up’

A woman opened up about the body shaming she’s received throughout her life.

As a teenager, Jacqueline Hooton was cruelly branded a beanpole by her peers.

And now, at 59 years old, she’s started receiving cruel comments from trolls who tell her to “act her age”.

The fitness-mad gran, from Bognor Regis, has been branded “embarrassing” for wearing hot pants.

But instead of covering up, she’s defied keyboard warriors by flaunting her toned figure on social media.

Jaqueline also recently shared a powerful post about her legs, which have opened her up to a lot of scrutiny over the years.

She wrote: “‘Oh my god your legs’, ‘your legs, tell me your secret’, ‘legs legs legs!

“I’m constantly asked about my legs on social media so I thought you might find this helpful.

“I was teased, called ‘beanpole’ and told my legs were too skinny, when I was a teenager. My legs have always drawn both negative and positive commentary, I’m kinda used to it by now.

“As a figure athlete my legs were not considered muscular enough – but I appreciated my legs for their strength.

“As a model my legs were not thought to be long enough – I still appreciated my legs for being long enough for me.

“As a runner who has competed in races of all distances they’ve never moved fast enough to win – I still appreciate legs that allow me to move quickly.

“Now I’m 59 thread veins weave around my right thigh like a garter, I have osteoarthritis in my knees, and a plantar plate issue in my foot.

“And guess what – I still appreciate my legs because we have history now!

“I train for functional ability, to be fit for life, my current and future health, and longevity. The specifics of my training include:

  • “two leg strengthening workouts a week (in addition to other strength days)
  • “a couple of runs a week
  • “a daily walk
  • “cycling everywhere (in preference to driving)

“In total this adds up to thousands of miles travelled each year via the power of my legs.”

Jaqueline shared her top tips to achieve the age-defying pins she has.

She added: “So the secret really is to USE your legs, MOVE your legs, and CHALLENGE them.

“How they look is really not the most important thing about them. Love and appreciate them anyway.

“Where they take you and how they function should be your focus.

“Genetics predetermined the length of my legs but the rest is down to movement.

“How are you moving your legs today?”

Jaqueline’s post garnered 5,200 likes and plenty of positive comments.

One responder wrote: “Your legs look fabulous.”

Another said: “Leg-endary!”

A third commented: “Great legs, great post! I used my legs to run a half marathon today.”

And a fourth added: “I too appreciate my legs. Strong and useful for everyday use – walks, hikes and standing still.”
