Hairdresser shares her three favourite hairstyles that are ‘instant facelifts’

Summer is just about to begin and why feel your best self with a new haircut? Andrea Claire, a hairstylist and makeup artist has shared three styles that give the illusion of a facelift and “pull you right into the modern age”.

1. Modern shag

Referencing Kaley Cuoco’s hair from The Flight Attendant, Andrea said this is one of her “favourite, fresh, facelifting cuts” because it is a “modern shag that isn’t mullet-y with a curtain fringe and layers that you can adapt for any age and face shape”.

When cutting this style, Andrea said she prefers to “point cut the layers” to “add to the natural movement” of the client’s hair.

But, “one of the biggest mistakes women make as they age is keeping one length, long hair. It becomes a security blanket that one hides behind”.

To combat this, add layers because these “provide lift and shape, which translates to a modern, youthful feel”.

2. Classic bouncy bob

For ladies who prefer a shorter hairstyle, luckily a bob never goes out of fashion, but a “slightly inverted and layered” bob “freshens up this classic look”.

This style will suit any hair texture and is great for those who like to leave their hair to dry naturally, or anyone who prefers using heat tools.

3. Long layers with a curtain fringe

“A simple fringe add-on to an already established style, aka The French Facelift. (Yes, we call it that),” Andrea remarked.

The curtain fringe “is a quick way to soften a look which rolls back years”.

Goldie Hawn is known for her iconic hairstyle, and Andrea suggested “playing with your parting” to “soften” the look.

When it comes to hairstyles to avoid, Andrea said a “chop and perm” is the “one style that dates you”.

The other haircut to steer clear of is the “extremely cropped, inverted bob”, especially when styled with “too much hairspray” to keep the “harsh lines” perfect.

And finally, don’t forget colour! Whatever haircut you have, consider a colour change, and Andrea recommends balayage to freshen up a client’s look.

“I love to accent these cuts with a sun-kissed whisper of colour,” she told She Finds. “Think traditional balayage and not the morphed versions we see of late.”
