Hair is a huge part of a woman’s identity and as they age, grey hairs will start to appear. For some, going grey can be empowering, but it can also add a few years on. Express.co.uk spoke to Laura Elliot, head of education at Neal & Wolf about the hair colours that can make you look younger.
Laura said: “Ageing can be a worry for some women but there are simple tips you can consider for a more youthful look.
“I would recommend avoiding harsh or severe hairstyles such as a middle part, this style can be quite flat to the head if you lack volume. If this is your go-to hairstyle try using a volumising shampoo which will significantly enhance volume without creating build-up, for a gorgeous, glossy lift.”
Instead, consider a “side parting which will naturally add lift to your hair from the roots”, but when creating a side parting, be careful not to end up with too much hair over one side of the face.
Laura added: “Having too much hair swept to one side does run the risk of looking outdated.
“How you part your hair is crucial depending on face shape and can alter how old you look, a side parting is a great option as it will soften your features and often creates more volume than a middle parting would as this style can stick to your head making you look older, this look also elongates the face.”
Anyone with thin hair or areas of thinning can also have a zig-zag parting if they’re worried about having a side parting. “This can add a lot of volume to fine and flat hair whilst still keeping the look of a middle part,” the hair expert revealed.
When it comes to what style to have, Laura suggests trying “a shoulder-length bob for added bounce and plenty of layers to soften the face and create more height”.
In terms of colour, she said: “When opting for a hair change, it is important to steer away from any bold colours as this can enhance ageing against older skin.
“Darker colours can add shadow which creates the illusion of more fine lines, use a warmer tone to add dimension to an overall dark hue.
“Alternatively, hair colours that are too light could wash you out, add subtle highlights that are a little lighter than your natural hair colour if you want a brighter look.”
Laura said, “working with your complexion and features is key to finding the right colour for you”.
“Usually, warm tones are much more complimentary than cool tones which can wash a lot of people out. I would recommend warmer tones such as caramel and golden hues whether this is a rich warm brunette, spiced auburn or golden blonde these are all great for creating a more natural and younger look.
“Grey hair has the potential to add years to your look whereas a warm brunette or golden bronde/blonde can lift your complexion by adding warmth and depth. With that being said, there isn’t a one colour fits, the best way to decide would be to speak to a professional stylist and take it from there.”
If you have naturally grey hair, there are ways to style it to ensure it looks modern.
Laura said: “For someone who is looking to rock their grey hair, a shorter hairstyle is often the best option. Opting for a short choppy bob or a pixie cut can take years off your look and add a fun edgy twist.
“When it comes to the maintenance of grey hair, it tends to be dryer and more frizz-prone so keeping it long can accentuate those dry ends.

“Long hair as a whole tends to be quite ageing compared to short, the length can drown out the facial features and cause the face to look longer and sunken.”
Anyone looking to “freshen up their look” should “try long bangs and layers as this will instantly make you feel younger and add height.”
Laura said: “Adding bangs or layers to your hair will help to shape your face, add movement and soften any roundness.
“The good thing about this style is that it suits any haircut from longer to shorter hair, either way, this will add character to a previously lifeless hairstyle to highlight your best features.”
