Why an over-sized suit is the new royal must-have! Princess of Wales and Meghan Markle are ditching slim fit for the trendy silhouette which ‘keeps them relevant’, expert reveals

With engagements and tours returning to normal this year following the Covid-19 pandemic, royals from around the world have embraced the oversized tailoring trend.

Among those to test out the trend were Meghan Markle, who opted for a white oversized Valentino outfit at the Invictus Game in The Netherlands in April, while weeks later, the Princess of Wales followed suit in Jamaica.

Meawhile, a slew of other European royals, such as Queen Maxima of the Netherlands or Queen Letizia of Spain and Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden have been trying out their own take on the oversized suit.

Celebrity fashion stylist Miranda Holder told Femail the on-trend silhouette is perfect for working royals because it’s both relevant and business friendly.

She explained: ‘This aesthetic works perfectly for the working Royal women as the on-trend silhouette keeps them relevant and fashion-forward.’

Meanwhile, she added the outfit would be suitable for any type of occasion, which is crucial for busy royals who often jump from one engagement to the next, and often have to complete whirlwind state visits.

‘The very nature of the suit, being traditionally intended as business attire, means they are appropriately dressed for the gravitas of whatever their schedule throws at them,’ Miranda said.

While oversized tailoring has been around for a few seasons, 2022 was the year thre trend was fully fully embraced by all.

Miranda explained: ‘The aesthetic has filtered down from high end to high street and has become such an accepted ‘fashion norm’ that the Royals are now tapping into this too.’

Among the royals to have picked up the trend are the Duchess of Sussex, who stepped out in a white oversized suit from Valentino at the Invictus Games in April.

She sported the £3,200 suit alongside her wedding shoes and earrings as she attended the Games in The Hague.

Her sister-in-law Kate opted for a similar outfit when she opened the National Windrush Monument at Waterloo station.

She wore a white suit from Alexander McQueen for the occasion, with a pair of large, flared trousers.

She initially debuted the white blaser during her and Prince William’s tour of Jamaica in March, but paired it with a slimmer leg at the time.

According to Miranda, the wider, looser leg made the look ‘more approachable’, which worked for the event which was taking place on Windrush Day and celebrated the dreams and courage of the Windrush generation.

Meanwhile, some European royals have been having fun with the trend, especially Queen Maxima of the Netherlands, who has tried it in very vibrant colours.

She wore wide-legged suit trousers to visit a community centre last week, which she paired with a large blue and yellow checked coat.

And earlier this month, Maxima opted for a lime green oversized suit to visit a classroom in Harleem, as part of her More Music in the Classroom campaign.

Meanwhile, the ever stylish Queen of Spain Letizia, 50, has also donned the oversized look recently.

This month, during a visit to Los Angeles, she donned a crimson suit from the Madrid-based designer Roberto Torretta to open the city’s first Cervantes Institute.

Meanwhile Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, 45, has also been having fun with the oversized suit trend this year.
