A woman revealed how she walked out on her husband and in-laws at New Year’s Eve after finding out they were all expecting her to pay for dinner.

The unnamed woman, 32, believed to be based in the US, said her husband wanted her to use the inheritance she received following her mother’s death last year to pay for the celebrations.

She wrote on Reddit’s Am I The A******? that she had not been told she’d have to pay until during the dinner, and decided to walk out of the restaurant and only paid for her own meal.

People on the forum agreed she had made the right call and added that neither her husband or his family should feel entitled to the money she received from her late mother.

The 32-year-old explained that her mother passed away last year and left her ‘ a good amount of money’ that she has been keeping in a separate bank account.

She added that her husband, whose name she didn’t share, seemed very interested in the money and kept coming up with suggestions on how she could spend in, while also expecting her to pay for most of their activities in recent weeks.

This culminated on New Year’s Eve, when the woman and her husband joined his family at a restaurant to ring in 2023.

‘It was going fine until I found out that I was expected to pay for everyone at the table,’ she revealed.

The 32-year-old revealed she got money after her mother died and that her husband kept suggesting ways to spend it

‘My husband’s mother joked about paying for dinner out of my “inheritance pocket” which made me livid but I showed no reaction,’ she added.

Instead, she revealed she paid for her own food and drinks before walking about of the establishment.

‘They were shouting after me like a crowd and my husband tried to get me to come back but I drove home,’ she said.

The 32-year-old added that her husband and her got into an argument later at home.

‘He got back at 3 a.m yelling at me saying I was pathetic to get up and walk out on him and his family after they relied on me to pay for their food and thought I was gracious enough to do it BUT they were wrong,’ she recounted.

The husband felt humiliated by her decision and accused her of refusing to pay because his parents had not been able to help during her mother’s illness.

People said the wife’s husband should not feel entitled to her money and that the in-laws were rude for acting like she had ‘won the lottery’

‘He is mad and is saying that I caused a huge rift between his family and me when it wouldn’t have hurt me to pay for the celebratory dinner,’ the wife added.

After she shared her story, many agreed that the 32-year-old was right not to pat for the whole dinner, because her husband should not feel entitled to her money.

‘So let me get this straight. Your mother died after an illness and the thing your in-laws take from this is “great, now she can pay for everything”,’ one said.

‘Yup. Her mom does and the in-laws thought “oh good. The bank is now open”,’ one said.

People advised the woman to get a lawyer in order to protect her inheritance from her husband

‘You wouldn’t believe how people act. When my buddies dad died and left him 10 million, one of his friends… at the funeral told him “Dude you are set for life now bro”,’ another pointed out.

‘I would NEVER expect my wife to use her inheritance from a family passing for anything other than what she wanted beyond drug binges or huge bad decisions that could effect us both, but I could only voice my opinion,’ one said.

‘If my husband were to inherit anything from his parents i wouldn’t even tell my family unless he wanted me to for some reason. you’re totally right, it’s nobody’s business,’ one wrote.

‘You need both a lawyer and a re-evaluation of your marriage. Perhaps a marriage counselor or a divorce attorney. Behavior like this is almost never isolated and unique,’ one said.

‘Very sorry for your loss and for the terrible place your husband has put you in,’ they added.

‘Your husband and in-laws are attempting to capitalize on your mother’s death. Keep the inheritance. Ditch the people who think you’re a walking ATM,’ one wrote.

‘I don’t understand families like this. My parents each had a parent die within 5 weeks of the other and they both said to each other that it’s their money so they won’t tell the other what to do with it,’ one said.

‘They act like you won the lottery and not buried your mother. I’m sorry for your loss,’ one said.

‘And even if she had won the lottery, her money is still none of their f****** business,’ one replied.

‘I’m so sorry for your loss and for this sh*** family you’ve married into. They probably seemed nice to begin with but I would take this as them showing their true colours and be prepared,’ they went on.
