I shower BEFORE my workouts… it's a life-changing hack

Savvy or stinky? Mom’s ‘life-changing’ workout hack sparks FURIOUS debate online – after she reveals she showers BEFORE the gym to save time… then heads straight to work after sweating

  • She stopped working out after she had kids because it took up too much time
  • Wiles started showering at home before her workouts to save time

A New York City mother has revealed that she showers before her workouts to save time in the morning, sparking a debate about whether the hack is genius or gross.

Ilana Wiles, 48, worked as an advertising creative director for 15 years before leaving her job to work on her blog, Mommy Shorts, full time. She has more than 150,000 followers on TikTok, where she shares videos about her life.

‘Why do I shower before my workout instead of after? I’ve been waiting for someone to ask me this question,’ she said at the start of the video.

‘First of all, I used to shower after I worked out. I would get up super early at like 6 a.m., go to the gym, do crazy cardio, sweat my a** off, come home, take a shower, and get ready by 9 o’clock.’

The mother of two explained that once she had kids, she found it ‘impossible’ to work out in the morning because it took too much time for her to come home and shower before heading to work.

Wiles said attitude shifted at she met her friend and fellow mom Jennifer Nyp, who is the owner of ZenGirl Fitness.

‘She encouraged me to take one of her classes, which is 10 minutes of cardio, 20 minutes of strength training, and then 30 minutes of Pilates,’ she noted.

‘So you might sweat in the first half hour, but by the time the session is over, you’re pretty dry. Now you might think that it’s gross to then get dressed and go about your day, but that was the only way I could figure out how to fit it in.’

One day she tried showering at home before going to her morning workout and she was thrilled with the results.

‘What I found is that the sweat that you sweat after you shower is not the same,’ she said. ‘When you’re clean and you work out, you don’t sweat nearly as much, and if you do sweat, it does not smell bad. That’s because you don’t have that layer of grime on your skin that the sweat sort of has to seep through.’

Wiles used to do heavy cardio in the mornings, but now she does a Pilates-based workout where she sweats a lot less

Wiles is correct that sweat itself doesn’t have a smell. Body odor occurs when perspiration comes in contact with bacteria on your skin.

‘I actually feel pretty fresh at the end of a workout, and my hair gets a nice little lift,’ she insisted. ‘I promise if it works for you, it will be a life-changing time saving thing.’

The mommy blogger noted in the caption that she didn’t work out for about 10 years until she figured out her showing hack.

Wiles’s video has been viewed more than 150,000 times, and there were a number of commenters who shared that they do the same thing.

‘I’ve been doing this for years! Also somehow the feeling of being clean is energizing?!’ one fan wrote.

Wiles’s video has been viewed more than 150,000 times, but her hack has gotten mixed reviews. Some fans shared they do the same thing, while others were horrified by the thought

‘OMG! Same. The old bacteria mixing with sweat is what causes the odor. I want everyone around me to get the freshest sweat possible! It works!’ another added.

‘Ok this might be the genius thing I needed!!’ someone else responded.

Some people didn’t understand how she was saving time, but Wiles explained in the comments that by showering before her 9 a.m. class, she was able to go straight to work at 10:30 instead of coming home to wash up and change.

Others were admittedly horrified at the thought of skipping their post-workout showers and going about their days.

‘Not being smelly doesn’t mean that you’re clean,’ one critic insisted.

‘I say get your workout in and do whatever you got to do. But I disagree lmao,’ someone else commented.

‘I mean this in the nicest way, have you asked anyone if you smell after you workout?’ another asked. ‘Just wondering if you don’t smell your own BO. Genuinely curious.’
