I tried supermarket own-brand sausage rolls and one tasted just like Greggs | The Sun
NO picnic is complete without a decent sausage roll.
The perfect one should have flaky, buttery pastry wrapped around a generous helping of lightly spiced sausage meat.
But with so many on offer on supermarket shelves, which will be most pleasing to your taste buds?
We asked writer and mum-of-three Lynsey Hope to compare some best-sellers and she found you don't always have to buy the most expensive ones for your sausage roll fix.
Here's what happened:

We test supermarket squash against Robinsons… the winner’s much cheaper
I tried supermarket own-brand coleslaw – the 80p winner was PERFECT for a BBQ
Lynsey says: "These looked almost identical to more expensive own brand sausage rolls, you really couldn't tell the difference.
They are a great price at Lidl too at just 39p per 100g, which is amazing value. I'm happy to report I wasn't let down on taste either.
The pastry was just right, buttery and flaky and inside the seasoning was nice. There was a good amount of filling.
These tasted better than more expensive alternatives and were my personal favourite."

Morrisons Fresh Bake Sausage Rolls
90p for 2 (67p per 100g)
Lynsey says: "These were impressive with a lovely golden colour and a tasty filling.
When eaten warm, these tasted quite similar to a Greggs sausage roll. The spicing was spot on.
One of the cheaper options too so they represent great value for Morrisons. I'd buy these again."

Asda Pork Sausage Rolls
£1.45 for 6 (40.3p per 100g)
Lynsey says: "For cheap sausage rolls, these have a great flavour.
They're a good size so one is enough and hit the spot for a snack.
There wasn't that much filling inside, but it was tasty enough.
They are quite high in fat compared to other brands with 14g in each one, so not the best for your waistline."

Aldi Specially Selected Pork, Bacon and Cheddar Sausage Rolls
£1.89 for four (£1.01 per 100g)
Lynsey says: "I laid these out amongst others at a buffet and they disappeared in minutes.
They looked like very posh sausage rolls. Not cheap from Aldi (in fact the second most expensive per 100g) but the pastry was delicious and the filling had a lovely flavour. Very impressive"

Waitrose No 1 Outdoor Bred Pork Mini Sausage Rolls
£4.25 for 12 (£1.42 per 100g)
Lynsey says: "Definitely a cut above the average sausage roll.
"These had a deeper colour than most but the pastry was light and flaky and they sausage flavour was delicious.
"They were very more-ish. Pricey. The most expensive per 100g in our test, but worth a little extra if you are planning a special picnic!"

Tesco 9 Mini Pork Sausage Rolls
£1.75 (65p per 100g)
Lynsey says: "The pastry on these was quite thick and chewy and the sausage meat was tasty, but nothing special.
The price is good so fine for a party if you're buying lots. Nothing wrong with them but I wasn't overwhelmed."

2 Sausage Rolls by Sainsbury's
80p (67p per 100g)
Lynsey says: "These looked quite appetising with a nice golden coloured pastry.
Sadly though, they tasted a bit too dry and there wasn't enough filling.
Not my favourite but the price was good."

We've also tested supermarket scotch eggs and the best one was from a bargain store.
