I'm a gardening expert – here's how to plant like a pro and great bargains on bulbs | The Sun

IT might feel like a long way off but, if you want to enjoy colourful blooms come spring, you had better get planting.

Even if you have only a windowsill, you can still make a beautiful display.

I’ve got some handy tips from Miracle-Gro gardening expert Kate Turner on how to plant just like a pro, as well as some great bargains on bulbs . . .

LAYER UP: To get an array of different blooms throughout the spring months, make a bulb lasagne, says Kate.

This means planting different bulbs in layers within the same container.

Start with a 10cm layer of bulb fibre compost. Then, plant the biggest and the latest flowering bulbs at the bottom, such as tulips and anions, followed by another layer of bulb fibre.

Next, place your medium bulbs such as daffodils — ideally a small variety as these work best in pots.

Repeat the process until you reach the top where you’ll have the smallest and earliest flowering bulbs, such as winter iris or crocus. Top the container with violas.

FLOWER POWER: At Thompson & Morgan you can stock up on discount bulbs. The bigger the pack, the more you save.

You can get 25 Narcissus bulbs for £6.99, down from £10.99, or double up with 50 for £8.99, down from £14.99. It has 32 “everlasting” tulip bulbs for £9.99, down from £21.98, which will bloom year after year.
