I'm haunted by my affair with older neighbour as a young teen | The Sun

DEAR DEIDRE: I HAD an inappropriate relationship with a male neighbour when I was a teen, but I wonder if it counts as abuse because I consented to it.

I’m a 22-year-old man and always got on with my neighbour, who is 50.

At the age of 12, I started helping him in his garden.

I was very curious about sex, and so when he made a move on me, I was overrun with excitement.

Looking back I know it was wrong, but at the time I was too young to know better.

We went on to have sex every week until I turned 16.

I feel so stupid for letting it happen and I’m haunted by the memory of it.

I know I should say something, but I’m worried it will tear my parents apart. They have a good friendship with him.

What should I do?

DEIDRE SAYS: The only person to blame in this situation is that older man.

He took advantage of your innocence and groomed you.

It’s not too late to get help to cope with what happened to you. You must do what is right for you, but you need support.

The NSPCC (nspcc.org.uk, 0808 800 5000) offers understanding and advice for abuse survivors.

My support pack Abused As A Child will help too.
