Is the new ‘Barbiecore’ trend too much for you? Try the grown-up version – Burgundy. And here are the hottest pieces to buy now

It may well be rosé season, but on planet fashion, red wine is the order of the day. Forget ice cream pastels and zesty brights, this summer the style savvy will be reaching for pieces in claret, merlot and burgundy.

An evolution of the popular ‘Barbiecore’ trend, which has seen pink dominate, deep reds are a more grown-up way to play with bold colour.

And though they’re typically associated with the colder months, this season’s catwalks demonstrated how a rich palette can successfully work for the summer, too. Just stick to lightweight fabrics and breezy silhouettes.

At Saint Laurent, slinky jumpsuits came in maroon and oxblood, while celebrity-beloved label Nensi Dojaka showcased sheer dresses in sunset shades.

But if, like me, you gravitate towards black and navy, even during a heatwave, then think of burgundy as a style refresh that doesn’t require leaving your comfort zone.

I’m tempted to switch my go-to black slip dress for Ghost’s berry one, which would work just as well with black sandals as it does with the raffia wedges by LK Bennett.

Then throw a coordinating shirt from With Nothing Underneath over the top for extra coverage in the evenings.

Speaking of coordination, a top-to-toe burgundy look is not only very of the moment, it’s also easy to wear.

Up your 9-to-5 style game with Jigsaw’s linen suit, adding a classic white T-shirt and loafers for freshness.

Cefinn’s checked maxi looks smart worn with burgundy mules and a sleek cross-body bag. Switch to white trainers and a woven tote at the weekend.

A pop of burgundy is a simple way to update basics for the season ahead. Give your white shirt a new lease of life by teaming it with plum-hued leather trousers.

Wine tones also make a sophisticated alternative to traditional florals for summer events. Essentiel Antwerp’s billowing halter dress is just the ticket for hot-weather weddings. Or up the glamour factor at summer cocktails with Rixo’s gold flash midi.

If you already have a burgundy dress, respin it with accessories. A pair of suede boots and neckerchief lend an elevated festival feel to a broderie anglaise maxi.

Or reach for a pair of clashing colour-pop sandals. Tangerine espadrilles will give a raspberry sundress a tutti-frutti look, perfect for wearing on holiday — with a sangria in hand, of course.
