Kate Somerville Melrose Place facial: We review Meghan Markle’s favourite treatment
If you’ve ever marvelled at a celebrity’s flawless complexion, the chances are there’s a good facialist behind it. And one name that’s in every A-lister’s little black beauty book is Kate Somerville.
With a flagship clinic in Los Angeles and a treatment room in New York, aesthetician Kate has a long list of famous clients, including Meghan Markle, Eva Mendes, Drew Barrymore and Olivia Wilde, as well as her own range of skincare.
The Kate Somerville products – which were created when Kate’s clients begged her for something they could use to replicate her salon treatments at home – have been on sale in the UK for years, but the professional treatments have previously only been available stateside. Until now, that is.
Kate Somerville’s treatment rooms opened up in Harvey Nichols earlier this year, offering the exact same facials available in her LA clinic – a menu of personalised skin treatments that include “first in the UK” technology, with speedy “lunchtime” peels starting from £65 and signature facials from £145.
Beauty editor Laura booked in to try Kim Cattrall’s personal favourite, the 90-minute Melrose Place Facial, designed to target dullness, dehydration and signs of ageing that can be tailored to individual skin needs. Here’s what she thought…
Laura says:
“I want a facial to be soothing but smart, offering me something that I can't achieve at home – and this treatment was exactly that.
“After cleansing, ExfoliKate Intensive Exfoliating Treatment was applied while a steamer got to work opening up my pores. Then came the tech: ultrasound to give further exfoliating, microcurrent to stimulate muscles, and oxygenating the skin. To soothe the skin, a hydrating putty-like mask was then applied, followed by a short spell under an LED light. The treatment ended with some essential skincare: eye cream, moisturiser and a spritz of UncompliKated SPF50 Makeup Setting Spray to set me on my way.
“I’ve had microcurrent technology before, and it’s always funny to feel your facial muscles twitching involuntarily as they’re activated by the device. Perhaps the most unusual stage was the hydrating mask, which can be applied completely over the eyes and mouth too, before setting enough to be peeled off in one satisfying sheet.
“The LED light felt lovely after the cooling mask; it’s how I imagine a lizard feels basking underneath a heat lamp. At this stage I also enjoyed a neck, shoulder and arm massage, ticking the “relaxation” box even further.
“My skin had been playing up before this treatment – a delightful combination of spots and sensitive skin – and so I was wondering how it would cope with some of the more active elements of this facial like the peel and the microcurrent, but I needn’t have worried. There was a slight (totally normal) tingle from the peel but it all felt really lovely.
“Afterwards my skin looked the most healthy it had in a long time, and my cheeks looked fuller and more lifted. My friend commented that my skin was glowing later that evening, and my boyfriend said that “that wrinkle under your eye has gone” (truly a result if he notices). It didn’t cure my niggly skin and the results were temporary, but this would be a brilliant treatment to have before a big event, red carpet or otherwise. The only downside is that, at £240, you may need an A-lister’s bank account to make this a regular habit…”
