The King of Norway was admitted to the hospital yesterday, where he is being treated for an infection.

King Harald, 85, is under the care of doctors at Oslo University Hospital Rikshospitalet, where he is receiving an intravenous antibiotic treatment.

The Norwegian royal household communicated that the sovereign, who has been relying on canes for several years, is in a stable condition.

It is not the Monarch’s first trip to the hospital this year – the father of Crown Prince Haakon underwent a leg operation in January before contracting Covid-19 in March, and spent time in hospital in August with another infection.

In a statement shared with the public, the Norwegian royal household said: ‘The King has been diagnosed with an infection which must be treated with intravenous antibiotics and will therefore remain at Rikshospitalet for a few days.’

The news comes after a month busy with engagements for the King, who remains active in his 80s.

Earlier this months, he attended the Nobel Peace Prize Banquet at Oslo’s Grand Hotel on December 10.

And on December 12, he inaugurated the Double-Track Express train line between Oslo and Ski.

The King looked well on his last public appearance, on December 13, when he attended a pre-Christmas church service for the King’s Guard at Oslo Cathedral.

In spite of suffering several health issues this year, including a leg operation a month before his birthday, and contracting Covid-19 in March, the 85-year-old still took part in the Sailing World Cup in July, where he finished in tenth place.

A few day later, he was admitted to hospital with an infection,

Harald V has ruled the Scandinavian country since January 1991, succeeding his father, Olav V.

A second cousin of Queen Elizabeth II, Harald is 77th in line to the British throne.

They are linked by great-grandparents King Edward VII, who reigned from 1901 to 1910, and Queen Alexandra of Denmark.

Edward was Queen Victoria and Prince Albert’s eldest son, with Queen Alexandra his wife of 47 years.

Harald’s relationship with Queen Sonja was initially controversial as she was a commoner born to a humble clothing saleswoman.

They married in 1968 despite some public opposition.

They have two children, with son Haakon, 49, the Crown Prince and heir apparent.

Their daughter is Märtha Louise of Norway, 51, who stepped down as senior working royal in November, to pursue commercial projects with her fiancé, but kept her royal title.

Although the monarch has allowed Princess Märtha Louise, 51, to keep her royal title, her father re-iterated that she will not be allowed to use it in

any future commercial partnerships with her partner Durek Verrett, 47.
