Tom, based in the UK, explained that sadly his 74-year-old parent has yet to wake up after suffering a stroke and a bleed on the brain last Saturday.

He told how he had been planning to travel to Portugal for two weeks from this Saturday – a week with his friend, and then a week with all his immediate family – but is now unsure whether he should still travel.

However, viewers were shocked by the advice, with one person saying: ‘Wow. How can they advise him to go on holiday while his mother is in a coma.’

Speaking on the programme today, Tom said: ‘My mum, who’s usually in good health, but last Saturday she suffered a stroke and she had a bleed on the brain.

‘She’s 74, she’s just been taken off the sedation but she’s still not woken up yet. Hopefully, my sister, my dad and my family are all praying that she’d be awake by now, but apparently doctors are happy with her test scans and results and stuff like that.’

He continued: I’m due to fly out on holiday to Portugal on Saturday and my friend is also supposed to join me for the first week and then the second week all my family was supposed to come out with me, my sister, my mum, my dad and all the grandkids.

‘My dad’s got a villa in Portugal so we were all going to spend a couple of weeks there as a family so we wasn’t expecting this to sort of happen literally a week before I was supposed to fly out. And now I don’t know whether to go or not.’

Deidre said: ‘I can imagine how torn you feel, in your hearts of hearts, what do you think your mum would say?,’ to which Tom suggested his mother would say he should go on his trip.

‘I think your mum would want you to go and have a good time,’ said This Morning co-presenter Alison Hammond, which was echoed by Deidre.

Reaction: However many viewers were left baffled by the comments, with one saying: ‘The advice today was awful.’

The agony aunt added: ‘I think, I’m really sorry for the dilemma you’re in and I’m sorry for the whole family because what a worry, but also I think either your mum is going to gain consciousness and she’ll just be glad you’re having a good time, and as soon as you get back you’ll see her.

‘But sadly, if she isn’t, you know she’s not going to know, so either way I think you should go.’

Co-presenter Dermot O’Leary also suggested Tom should continue with his holiday plans.

He said: ‘It’s not like you’re going to go and swan it up, and have the best time of your life over there. You’re going to be thinking about your mum all the time.

‘And when you get back, there’s going to be a road to recovery here that’s going to be hard for your whole family, so if you and your family, if anyone can get over there, and just get a little bit of rest and a little bit of focus, and a bit of a reset, then you’re going to be so focused on your mother by the time you get back, that I think you might need this.’

Some viewers also agreed with the agony aunt, writing: ‘Just go Tom, I’m sure she’ll still be there when you get back.’

Tom suggested that he would video call his mother if she did wake up while he was over in Portugal, to which Deidre suggested was a good idea.

‘I just cannot imagine her resenting you having gone and recharging your batteries,’ said the agony aunt.

However viewers were left baffled by the comments, with one saying: ‘The advice today was awful.’

A second added: ‘Jesus, he’s trying so hard to justify this so he can go! Your mum’s in a coma mate. But if a bit of sun is more important, off you go.’

Another said: ‘Wow, the most terrible advice to Tom! How can he think of going on a holiday when his mum could possibly die. If it was my relative and they went on holiday I wouldn’t speak to them again!’

A fourth wrote: ‘If anything happens to his mother while he’s on holiday he is going to feel guilty for the rest of his life.’

However, some agreed with the agony aunt, writing: ‘Just go Tom, I’m sure she’ll still be there when you get back.’
