Marion Cotillard Buys A New 1930s Villa In Los Angeles For $5.4 million

French actress whose Academy Award-winning performance as Edith Piaf in La Môme (2007; also released as La Vie en rose) propelled her to international fame Marion Cotillard knows how to make a good deal when it comes to real estate in Los Angeles. The Mediterranean villa she bought last year (she was just revealed as the buyer) was on the market for $7 million, but she and partner Guillaume Canet nabbed it for $5.4 million. That’s a steal of a deal, especially when home sales were red hot at the time.

According to Dirt, It turns out the mystery buyer who last year paid millions for a Los Feliz estate on a fashionable hillside street was Marion Cotillard, the Academy Award-winning French actress who’s been working steadily in the industry for nearly 30 years. The Chanel muse, 47, is also apparently a skilled dealmaker — records show the transaction closed at a heavily discounted $5.4 million, well off the property’s hefty original $7 million price tag.

Born in 1970s Paris to an artistic family, Cotillard first gained global fame for an iconic starring role in 2007’s “La Vie En Rose,” in which she portrayed legendary singer Edith Piaf. The French-language film grossed more than $86 million worldwide and won Cotillard the Oscar for Best Actress, among a litany of other awards. Since then, she’s worked with some of the most revered filmmakers worldwide and starred in a slew of Hollywood blockbusters (“Inception,” “The Dark Knight Rises,” “Public Enemies,” “Midnight in Paris”). She also co-owns Paris-based production company Newtopia.

As for Cotillard’s new American pied-à-terre, the roughly 4,000-square-foot structure strives to be as effortlessly chic as its owner. Built in the 1930s, the two-story home is described as “Traditional-style” in its listing, but the place has more than a subtle hint of Mediterranean villa-inspired energy about it.

No part of the house is visible from the street, as it lies tucked away atop a high knoll, behind mature trees and other dense foliage. A hidden alleyway leads up behind the property to a detached two-car garage; directly below that sits a discreetly-situated guesthouse. From there, a gated walkway has steps leading down to the main house, which is surrounded by a vibrant array of flowers, original fountains and red-brick patios.

Inside, hardwood floors flow throughout the residence. Main floor spaces include a gym, a library, a living room with an ornate fireplace and a formal dining room with sliding doors opening to an al fresco patio. The kitchen connects to a cozy family room, and there are two guest bedroom suites — one with French doors opening to the gardens.

Upstairs are two master suites, both with ensuite bathrooms and balconies with spectacular views of the Downtown L.A. skyline and beyond. There’s also a large bonus room that could be a fifth bedroom, or perhaps an executive office, glam room or private reading room.

The north side of the house sports a vast, tree-shaded brick terrace that could equally accommodate an intimately romantic dinner or a grand gala. And behind the home lies an unexpectedly huge swimming pool, complete with an old-timey diving board and more impressive views of city lights. Other outdoor amenities include a built-in barbecue center, various fruit trees and an organic vegetable garden.

Cotillard and her longtime partner, French thespian Guillaume Canet, continue to divide their time between California and a home in Paris.
