Married at First Sight UK and US differences including legal marriages
With its heartwarming declarations of love anddramatic shock romances, it’s no surprise that viewers up and down the country are captivated by this year’sMarried At First Sight UK.
But while fans at home may be used to watching the newlyweds embark on a series of weekly dinner parties and commitment ceremonies, all while living in the same apartment block, the show used to look very different.
In fact, it wasn’t until 2021 that all of these additions were added in a revamp of the format in order to make it more like the Australian version.
But despite the show’s similarity with its Australian counterpart, a US version of MAFS exists and it's very different indeed. Let’s take a peek why…
Auditions
Unlike the UK version of the show, the US version allows viewers to watch the audition process.
Rather than jumping into the contestants’ life stories, the show kickstarts with a series of potential singletons fighting for their spot on the show.
As part of this, all potential stars are sat in an auditorium where the experts talk them through what the show is about.
Similarly, while the Australian version sees 12 couples say ‘I Do’, the most recent US version only saw five.
Ceremonies
A key part of Married At First Sight is that the couples, well, marry at first sight. However, US contestants are allowed to exchange a gift before their nuptials, giving them some insight into who exactly they’re marrying.
In addition to writing a card, gifts such as jewellery, socks and sweet treats are sent as a pre-wedding present.
What’s more, friends and families of those involved are also the people to write the vows for the bride and groom.
Legalities
While the UK version of the show used to produce legally binding weddings, that all changed when the format was given a revamp two series ago.
As a result, all weddings on the UK show are not legally binding. However, the US version does produce legal weddings and contestants sign marriage licences after the ceremony has taken place.
Speaking toTheWrap, Chris Coelen, the CEO of Kinetic Content, said that contestants were given a prenup, however.
“It's a very short, brief prenup. It basically says what they walk in to [the marriage with], is what they walk out of the marriage with,” he said.
Living arrangements
A big part of the drama of MAFS UK comes from the contestants’ dinner parties which sees each couple interact with one another and give their opinions on the chemistry they do, or don’t, see.
However, given the size of the US, it’s no surprise that the couples don’t all live in the same apartment block and are instead spread across the country in order to keep it as authentic as possible.
