Meaning of ‘on job’ as phrase takes over the Love Island villa

Love Island always brings the drama and iconic TV moments, but it also comes alongside a new catchphrase each year.

The ITV2 show has produced several catchy phrases over the years, from 'it is what it is' to 'putting all my eggs in one basket' and 'muggy', with some even making it onto merchandise.

This year, the famous villa has been taken over by the phrase 'on job', with the Islanders using it several times per day when speaking to one another.

As another catchphrase gets added to the Love Island dictionary, let's take a look into what 'on job' really means…

As per Collins Dictionary, 'on job' means: “If someone is on the job, they are actually doing a particular job or task.”

In Love Island terms the definition isn't that much different, with the Islanders saying they are 'on job' when they're planning to graft somebody in the villa – their main job on the show.

The phrase is particularly popular amongst the boys on the show, with the likes of Ron Hall and Kai Fagan repeatedly saying they are 'on job' when speaking to one another or enjoying their daily debrief with the other boys.

While it seems to be a big hit in the villa, Love Island viewers aren't so keen on the latest saying to come out of the villa.

Taking to social media, many fans have complained about the constant use of 'on job' and have even wondered if TV bosses have prompted them to say it so often.

"Whoever in that villa started this ‘on job’ nonsense needs to leave immediately #loveisland," one viewer wrote, as a second said: "Does production give them these sayings? "Get on job" makes me want to vomit #loveisland".

A third fan said: "The boys saying "on job" is such a big ick #LoveIsland".

"When did 'get on job' become a thing we say and how can we stop it? #loveisland," a fourth confused fan tweeted.

In previous years, phrases such as '100% my type on paper' and 'I've got a text' have become popular thanks to Love Island, with fashion retailer Primark even printing them onto t-shirts for fans of the show.

However, going by viewers' reaction to 'on job', it doesn't look like it'll become the new 'it is what it is' anytime soon.

Love Island continues on ITV2 at 9pm.
