Mormon missionary says she nearly DIED while preaching in Argentina

Mormon missionary who nearly DIED while preaching scripture in Argentina reveals how church leaders simply told her they’d ‘say a PRAYER for her’ when she begged them for medical help

  • Keylee Peterson, 24, from Utah, developed a lump on her back during the trip
  • It left her in severe pain, but she said her pleas for help were ignored
  • One night, she woke up with blood coming from her nose and mouth

A Mormon missionary who nearly died while preaching scripture in Argentina has revealed how her church leaders simply told her they’d ‘say a prayer’ for her while she was bleeding profusely and begging them for medical assistance.

Keylee Peterson, now 24, from Ogden, Utah, explained that she had been raised as a ‘devout Mormon’ her entire life, and was ecstatic when she was sent to South America to begin her missionary work at age 19.

But when the then-teen developed a strange lump on her back – which left her in so much pain she could hardly walk – her pleas were continuously ignored by the people in charge of the trip.

She said she struggled to see a doctor for weeks and when she did, she was given ‘mysterious pills that made her so loopy’ – and even after blood started to pour out of her mouth and nose, her ailments were still left untreated.

She spoke out about her harrowing journey during a recent appearance on the Cults to Consciousness podcast.

Keylee told host Shelise Ann Sola that she spent seven months living in Córdoba, Argentina, in 2018, while trying to convince locals to join the church.

But she admitted that looking back, it felt like they were taking advantage of those who simply ‘needed someone to talk to.’

She recalled being forced to wake up at 6:30 in the morning for scripture study, and would spend hours on end going door to door in the hot sun – sometimes only returning to her hotel at 10 at night.

Not only was she not paid for her work, but she said her parents actually had to fork over a fee of $450 a month during the mission.

She also claimed that she was given only $50 per month for food, which often left her without enough money to eat.

‘You could only buy the bare minimum with what you were given,’ Keylee said, adding that going days without eating was considered normal.

The 23-year-old explained that at one point during the trip, she developed a severe stomach bug that left her throwing up for days.

At one point on the trip, she developed a stomach bug and had to go to the doctor. They gave her a shot in her back, and a ‘lump’ soon grew where the injection site was

‘I was hallucinating from [lack of food], it was horrible. I went to the hospital and they gave me a shot in my back and said that it would fix it, it will stop me from puking,’ she revealed.

‘But then, after that, I got a lump in my back where the shot injection site was. I started to have back pain and it got progressively worse. It was killing me.’

Keylee said she eventually went to see another doctor, who told her she had developed a ‘little cyst of fluid’ and that she would be ‘fine’ after taking some anti-inflammatories.

She followed his advice but it continued to worsen – and not only did the pain intensify, but it soon started to spread to other parts of her body.

‘I felt really stiff all the time,’ she explained. ‘It was radiating to my legs, if I walked for too long I wanted to sit and cry because it was the worst pain I’ve ever felt before.

‘I got in contact with my mission president’s wife because that’s who we’re supposed to call if we have medical needs, and she told me to just take Ibuprofen.’

Keylee said she knew ‘something was seriously wrong’ and went to see another doctor – but this time, he gave her a slew of pills that he described as ‘muscle relaxers.’

She revealed: ‘He opened the cabinet, grabbed this scoop of samples and like, lays them on the table and says, “Here’s the muscle relaxers.”

‘He just gave me all these drugs. He then preceded to tell me to put lemon on my butt.

‘He said to chop up a lemon in halves and put it on my butt and that will stop my back pain. I was so frustrated.’

Unsurprisingly, the medical professional’s bizarre advice ‘didn’t work,’ and the medication just made her feel ‘out of it.’

She also tried ‘shock therapy’ per the recommendation of a physical therapist, and visited a chiropractor who tried cracking her back – but nothing eased the pain.

Then, things took a drastic turn when Keylee was suddenly woke up in the middle of the night due to blood pouring out of her nose and mouth.

Terrified, she called the mission president, who responded with, ‘We can say a prayer.’ Keylee said that she knew ‘prayers were not going to cut it’ in that moment, and went to the hospital

‘Around two in the morning, I woke up to a bloody nose. I’ve gotten bloody noses before so I was like, “Oh it’s fine.” But then it kept going and all of a sudden it’s coming out of my mouth too,’ she recalled.

‘It’s everywhere, there’s a lot of blood. It was like draining out of my nose and mouth. It was not stopping.’

Terrified, she woke up her roommate who called the mission president and told him what was happening. But to her dismay, he responded with, ‘We can say a prayer.’

The former Mormon said that she knew ‘prayers were not going to cut it’ in that moment, so she headed to the hospital.

She soon discovered she had a herniated disc in her back, and flew home. Thankfully, it seems as though she’s made a full recovery, and she and her parents ultimately left the church. She’s seen recently

Unfortunately, she was told that there were ‘no doctors’ available because it was a holiday weekend, so they ‘stuffed gauze up her nose’ and instructed her to ‘eat sugary things’ until Tuesday.

After days of ‘horrific’ bleeding and weeks of endless pain, she finally got an X-ray the following week, and found out that she had a herniated disc.

She was told she would need to get further testing, but would have to travel four hours to the capital to get it.

While the mission president apologized to her because he ‘didn’t realize she was in so much pain’ – he still was in no rush to get her the assistance that she so desperately needed.

Keylee said she was told that she would only be able to get a ride to the capital when they were scheduled to go there for a mission ‘a couple weeks’ later.

‘They didn’t care enough, I was like four hours away from the capital. My health wasn’t worth the four hour bus drive,’ she said.

After over a month of agony, Keylee was finally sent home after she was told she’d need surgery on her back.

Thankfully, it seems as though she’s made a full recovery, and she and her parents ultimately left the church.
