Mrs Hinch’s toothpaste hack will get your jewellery looking good as new
Many of us have some silverware tucked away in a drawer that needs sprucing up, or a piece of jewellery that's long past its sparkling prime – but what's the best way to get them looking as good as new?
The answer lies in a very cheap cleaning product, and the good news is you already have it in your bathroom.
High-profile lifestyle influencer Sophie Hinchcliffe – better known as Mrs Hinch– has made a successful career sharing clever cleaning hacks on social media and TV.
And with more than 4.5 million followers onInstagram, there’s never any shortage of fans elaborating on the tips and often sharing some of their own.
And over on Facebook, user Debbie Jane asked the cleaning queen's followers how best to spruce up some silver jewellery.
“I’ve used jewellery-cleaning dips and cleaning cloths. Can anyone help me, and advise me what I should use?” she said.
Debbie’s post quickly attracted almost 100 comments from eager fellow cleaning enthusiasts.
And the answer most came up with was refreshingly simple – use toothpaste.
Gillie Barry said: “Use toothpaste and scrub with an old toothbrush, then wash in soapy water. Or buy a silver cleaner.”
Liz Marsland replied: “Toothpaste and a cotton cloth to buff up.”
And Margaret Edwards agreed that toothpaste and a toothbrush will clean it up, adding ‘I had a silver bracelet – it always goes black and this works’.
Katie Eyre suggested: “Toothpaste with a soft brush or bicarbonate of soda and hot water works with mine.”
Mandy Ohaire offered the same advice with a twist, saying “toothpaste babes, then place in washing-up liquid all night, comes out fresh".
This is indeed a clever and affordable cleaning hack, with many big brand toothpastes only setting you back a £1:
- OraCare+ Sensitive Toothpaste costs just £1 from Sainsbury’s.
- Colgate Regular Toothpaste costs £1 from Ocado.
- Boots Sensitive Toothpaste is also available for just £1.
Other ideas
Other ideas to keep silver looking spick and span included bicarbonate of soda, gin, tin foil, ash and washing-up liquid.
Nola Stirling posted: “In a small pot put water, bicarbonate of soda, vinegar and a piece of tinfoil. Boil up with jewellery. Leave for about ten minutes, turn off heat and let it sit for about 20 minutes.
“Then, take out and polish with a soft cloth. Works a treat,” she said.
Elsewhere, Amanda Henderson said ‘neat gin’ worked wonders, while Carol Wilson advised the use of ‘bicarbonate of soda hot water’.
Amanda Durkin confidently proclaimed that ash was the best thing to clean silver.
“If you can get hold of some, get a wet cloth, dip in ash, rub on silver and then buff up with a dry cloth. Works wonders. Old-school method,” she said.
Jude Jowett largely agreed and posted: “Tin foil in a dish with soda crystals and hot water, leave for 30 minutes, wash and polish with soft dry cloth.”
And finally Mya Cornwell puts her silver in hot water with washing-up liquid and bicarbonate of soda.
So there you have it, hi ho silver cleaning … and away you go!
