Brits are utterly devoted to their four-legged friends, and National Dog Day (August 26) is the perfect opportunity to pay tribute to them and those who need rescuing. The Queen has owned several dogs over her lifetime, and her love for canines has extended to several members of the Royal Family.

The Queen and Candy

The Queen has had countless corgis and dorgis (a corgi-dachshund cross breed) over the years. But one royal dorgi called Candy won the nation’s hearts when he gate-crashed the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee memorabilia viewing in Windsor Castle while searching for treats earlier this year.

Princess Charlotte and Orla

A sweet photo was taken of Princess Charlotte and the Cambridge family’s Cocker Spaniel Orla earlier this year. The picture was taken by the Duchess of Cambridge in Norfolk to mark the Princess’ seventh birthday.

Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall and Beth

The future Queen Consort was joined by her Jack Russell Terrier named Beth at the Battersea Dogs and Cats Home in 2020, and the pooch looked committed as she grabbed hold of a sausage to unveil a new plaque.

Prince Charles and Harvey

Prince Charles was utterly devoted to his Labrador called Harvey, and he joined Charles and Lady Diana Spencer for a photocall at Balmoral ahead of their wedding in 1981. Sadly, Charles reportedly had to give Harvey away to an adviser after his marriage.

Prince William and Lupo

Prince William and Kate Middleton adored their dog Lupo, and the Cocker Spaniel often joined them at country events. Lupo died in 2020, and the Cambridges announced the death in an emotional statement on Instagram which read: “Very sadly last weekend our dear dog, Lupo, passed away. He has been at the heart of our family for the past nine years and we will miss him so much. – W & C”.

Princess Anne and her Bull Terrier

The Queen’s only daughter was joined by an excited-looking Bull Terrier in 2018 at the Festival of British Eventing at Gatcombe Park in 2018.

Prince Edward and Frances

To mark his 18th birthday in 1982, Prince Edward posed with his Labrador called Frances in the surroundings of Buckingham Palace.

Princess Margaret and her King Charles Spaniel

The Queen’s late sister was a huge fan of the King Charles Spaniel breed, and she was seen stroking her pet the year she married Antony Armstrong-Jones in 1960.
